Does anyone know of one?

There is no such thing. It is highly dependent on what you're compressing. ie plain text files can be compressed at mad ratios while mp3's are a waste of time to compress.

I'm trying to get a certain utility working. Its for... well, all you need to know is that the file that the utility will be running needs to be under 4 Mb. the file I need to compress is a .NDS file.

OH, and to test it, I used a file that was 8.2 mb, and then patched it to 6.4, then trimmed it to 6.0, then used WinRAR to compress it to 3.2, and it worked. Disgustingly slow load time, but it worked.

Try 7z, it has mad compression, but will take time and a lot of resources.

7ZIP will compress a lot in his ultra setting, it will last more than winrar but it compress a lot more

winzip, dont even try it
winrar, very good on the best setting
7zip a lot more better

Remaining vague won't get you a useful answer.

OK, there is a SLOT-1 Media Chip for Nintendo DS called "Games N' Music DS". It's made by Datel, and is one of the few chips sold in the states. The reason it's sold in the states, is because it doesn't support commercial ROMs. Well, someone wrote an app that launches from Moonshell, and it supports commercial ROMs, as long as the file is under 4 megs. I got about a 2:1 compression with WinRAR, and some other forums said that there were some 4:1 compression utilities out there, but no one seemed to know where.

done.

ty for the poll idea.

I did a little personal bench

my files include one wav file, one jpg file, one document, and one small program...all total at 944 kb

7z at maximum = 869 kb, a compression of 8%

winrar at max = 793 kb, a compression of 16%

winRK at max = 754 kb, a compression of 20%

from what i have read, 7z would perform much better if given large files.

edit: built in windows got about 10%

maybe you want to trim the rom, search in sosuke forums for the apps, these are the official forums for the ez3,ez4,ez5 flash carts

you need a tool for the ez5, cant remember the name

UMMMM... once you get the compressed file on the Nintendo DS:

How the hell are you going to uncompress it?

"Infima is a new high performance file archiving technology. Built from the ground up for better compression and security but not in the cost of performance, it provides the best platform for managing and creating file archives which are 10%-85% better than all existing products."

You clould look into this.

right, well I've been testing a few, including yours and also gunzip, but my compression ratios are varying a LOT. Thanks for the info though, i haven't tried winRK yet.

.NDS?

Less than 4MB?

Are you trying to email a ripped Nintendo DreamStation ROM through a corporate mail server with a 4MB attachment limit?

Naughty naughty :nutkick:

P.S. It's very easy to do. You are using the wrong tool for the job. LOL

no, as I said before, GnM doesn't support commercial ROMs, and the glitch that allows ROMs to be played on it is bound by a 4MB restriction.

well, considering the utility that launches it has the ability to play ROMs in a compressed state, I wouldn't really need to.

It supports all compression formats or just some of them?

If it only supports some of them, then it's going to be a lot easier telling you which one to use.

so far it supports zlib, 7z, rar, and zip formats, but I'm actually researching an efficient compression format for the programmer who's designing the utility.

Well your only luck is with 7z or winrar, for winRK will make *.rk files.

hm... s'posse your right. thanks for the help

utility

if someone has the utility mentioned earlier, could you send it to me? i am looking for a way to load the ds browser rom compressed on my games n music. my email is: aflem301@embarqmail.com
