a friend of mine is having a problem with her computer locking up. as long as she keeps moving the mouse around every min or so it is fine but if she leaves it alone for 3 or 4 min it will freeze up. no ctrl alt del or anything. there are no hibernate or suspend settings enabled and it is a fresh install of XP pro and a relitively new built computer. older nvidia vid card but everything else is pretty new. im not sure on the exact specs as of yet. my room mate was over there doing windows updates last night, and it locked up on him, and that is when she told him about the locking up problem. and sure enough when he didnt move the mouse while it was downloading the updates it froze. so he had to keep moving the mouse in circles while he was using it. he tried a diferent mouse too, and still the same problem. any ideas? :respect:

anyone have any suggestions?

Hmm... If you are running something that uses a decent amount of processing power and don't move the mouse or anything will it lock up?

Only thing I can think of here is the new idea of everything needs to have disgustingly high amount of power saving features... My girlfriends mothers computer is a new Compaq amd 3800+ that runs at about 900mhz when you let it sit a minute... After installing a few programs that stay running all the time, it also locks up all the time... Too make it worse, I am yet to figure out how to turn the crap off in the bios or in windows, its not the cool n quite drivers...

So honestly I would check for that... Only thing that comes to my mind.

yeah it was already set like that. it will freeze up while doing anything, unless ya move the mouse around. my room mate did all the updates and stuff but he had to move the mouse around the whole time. and he tried 2 dif mice on it with the same effect. both PS2 and USB.

you say its an older nvidia card, what card and drivers is your friend using, also might help if you list system specs.

im not sure what they are. but i know it is an older AMD like 1.3mhz with 512 ram and the vid crd is a MX400

him your computer locks up.... check what your running and see if it affects it cause this shouldn't happen it could be your ram or your mouse but i'm just giving a suggestion

when i go over there i am gonna try using the event viewer to see if it gives me any advise. ill let you guys know what i find out. thanks...

this reminds me of 2 problems, if the Hdd's connected via splitters to the psu check the connections and if not that check for dust build up of the vga fan if it has one.

All sound like positive suggestions. If it was power saving or standy/hibernate....it wouldnt just lock up on you. My guess is, there is probably a driver or dll file conflict. Years ago I had the same problem. It usually happened either with my ram accessing something, or driver/dll file conflicts. Check those and the device manager and all that and make sure everything is clean.

check for any IRQ conflicts. do some googling on the mainboard the system has that keeps freezing, try to find out if its a bug with the bios that was fixed with an update.

Download a linux live CD and see if it freezes up while running linux. That could help determine if it's a windows driver conflict or something closer to the hardware level.

Perhaps run Memtest86+ and see what happens?

one of the windows usb/input drivers maybe dead, download them from the mobo's manufacturer. this happened with me a year back...check on www.driverguide.com to run a driver scan to ensure if any driver is corrupted or so. then goto the corrupted driver's manuf. page download new drivers. worked 4 me ;)
