Processor AMD Phenom II x6 1090t BE
Motherboard MSI 870A-G54
Cooling CM Hyper 212+
Memory Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB)
Video Card(s) Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 flashed to 6970
Storage Samsung F3 spinpoint 1TB & Crucial 64Gb SSD
Case CM 690 II
Power Supply Seasonic S12II Bronze
Earlier today I was testing out my computer after I over clocked it to 4ghz and my computer just completely shut down and now won't even turn on. I've tried resetting the CMOS and tried taking out the silver button battery for 15 sec and it won't do anything. I think it might be the power supply but I wanted to make sure before I replaced it. My computer is less than a week old so I hope it's not anything serious. Thanks for the help.

Computer specs:
Phenom II x6 1090t
MSI 870A-G54
Sapphire radeon HD 6950- flashed to 6970
Seasonic S12II 620w psu

I tried unplugging the psu from the wall and resetting the bios but no luck I'll try the other when I get home from work.

This just happened to me ! I was on it for hours today , Turned it off for about an hour or so went to turn it back on and NOTHING ! I would get the HDD light once the CD/ROM lights and then the one CD/ROM light just stayed on , No monitor no nothing , I took out the battery , I reset the jumper for the CMOS and every thing nothing happened , I took out the RAM put it in different slots , Still nothing I even booted it up with out the RAM still nothing ! I finally just unplugged it all went out to have a smoke ( All the time thinking f**k my system is fried ! ) came back plugged it all back in and what do you know it all booted up fine ! WTF ?? :wtf:
I do not know why but maybe just unplug the PSU for a bit come back and see if that helped .

One of my overclocking experiences left me in the same boat... I don't really know if was the solution, but I took out the CPU, put it back in, greased it up and Bam! ...it was working again just fine. Had tried just about everything else as well.

One other thing to try is popping out the ram and re-seating it. Sounds silly, but worth a try.

sounds like some from of OCP from the PSU, leaving it must have reset it.

Forgive my ignorance but what does OCP leaving PSU mean ?

over current protection. it should reset when the PSU is unplugged then plugged back in but some times you need to unplug it turn it on and off using the switch on the back.

Hmm Interesting I have an APC battery back up ( BIG one ) how does this happen ? What can cause this ? Could it be because I have a meanwell PSU hooked to it ? ( Not with out a relay that is ) . The meanwell uses a 12v connector on the psu to turn it on .

Quoted questions/answers from Seasonic support site:

"Q32 What should I do when my power supply suddenly shuts down?"

Seasonic power supplies have safety functions to protect against hazards and equipment damage. Should your power supply fail to function properly, please verify the following:

1. Ensure that the I/O switch on the power supply is switched to "I".
2. Make sure all the appropriate power connectors are properly connected to the motherboard and peripherals.
3. If the system still does not turn on, please turn off the power supply through the I/O switch a few seconds to reset the protection circuits, then switch to the "I" status again.

If your power supply still fails to operate after checking all the steps, please return the power supply for warranty service.

"Q42 Power Supply Jump Start Guideline- To check if the PSU is functional"

1. Remove the AC power cord from the power supply and unplug the power supply from all peripheral devices.
2. Short between the green and black wires on the 24-pin connector (as show below), with a paper clip or piece of wire.
3. Plug the AC power cord into the power supply. Have the AC coming directly from wall outlet. And then set the switch to “I” status
4. See if the power supply fan is running. If so, your supply is probably good.

Now I am scared to turn my system off . :twitch: I do not know if it will do this again !

Ok I tried shorting between the green and black wire. The fan on the power supply isn't running but I tested the voltages while it was shorted and it reads the right voltages. I tried letting it sit unconnected for the whole night like someone above mentioned and I also tried reseating the ram and nothing worked. So if the psu reads the right voltages then does that mean that something else is the problem?

If you shorted the green and black wires on the PSU connector and the fan on the PSU did not come on it is the PSU . Try a new PSU and you should be fine . I would venture a guess that it is gone .

am i the only one wondering how the gpu flash went? How long after the flash did this happen? Maybe you bricked your card... what vlts were your running it at with what temps...ect...

On the topic of bad powers supplies... sometimes when they go bad, it's not obvious, voltages may appear normal but under load they get flakey... or a 5v or individual 12v rail may be bad while others are good.

I speak from experience and the loss of two nice motherboards and two graphics cards :(

I flashed it on Thursday and everything went fine. It was at stock volts and running ~43C

One way to rule out the PSU as an issue , Get a second one and try it out . I think the PSU is gone . But this doesn't mean that the video card is bricked as flashing a video card can cause it to fry .

Jst re read your post I'd look at why your psu fan isn't going... might have overheated it... you had the psu out and bypassed and the fan wouldn't spin right? I'd chk the psu then the gpu

So how would I check the GPU to see if it is bad?

First start with the PSU get a new one , My bet is that the PSU is not working . Just because you flashed your card doesn't mean it is gone . you can test this card out by placing it in another computer but that might not be an option just yet . The fact that you jumped the PSU connections and the PSU fan did not come on tells me that it is GONE .

Ok Ill try getting another PSU. Im hoping that is the problem anyway.

i have seen powersupplys that have decent fan control, where the fan would stay off untill needed.

have you tried the basics?

Take the motherboard out of the case.

Only have the powersupply , motherboard and cpu (and cpu) connected.

turn on the system via the pins on the motherboard using a screwdriver (where you plug in the power on off switch from the case)

does any thing happen or spin up?

Nope nothing spins up and nothing happens

Tried a different power supply and still nothing....
