Posting this as I've had success with the mod identified on http://www.techpowerup.com/articles//overclocking/vidcard/127/2

Bought a connect3d card this week from ebuyer and tried the flash bios modification, and unbelievably it worked.....

Card now shows 16 pipes where it was originally 12.
Core still shows as an R423.

Havent clocked it up yet, new to this overclocking video cards thing. Been OC'ing cpu's for years but never bothered much with graphics cards. Will have a read through the forum to see what i should be doing, and what i should be aiming for.

PS.

Hi to the group....and thanks for the guide....

Jav

OC'd card

Card oc'd to 470Mhz Core, and 545Mhz Memory.....
FPS on the 3D View goes up to an average of 250FPS.

Is this abour right? or should I get more out of this?

Thanks again
Jav

these gtos come in so many different varients its impossible to say what u should get.. the cores vary and so does the memory.. u get what u get..

when the core reaches its max it will lock up when the memory reaches its max it will show artifacts or lock up.. u take each one up one at a time untill this happens then u know..

trog

My first Connect3D X800GTO unlocked to 16p and overclocked at 550/550 couldn't go any higher than that. It gave me some nice banchmark number.
My second Connect3D X800GTO didn't unlock BUT it overclocked to 610/600 stable and gave me benchmarks almost as good as my first one.

I used the ATI Tool to clock the card up, and watched it step up a couple of Mhz at a time.
The PC crashed when increasing the core speed to 474Mhz. I rebooted, then tried the memory and it stepped up slowly to a maximum of 542.7Mhz before it said artifact errors were detected.

I then ran the card after reboot at 470/540 and it's sweet, but nowhere near what you guys are getting... still showing 16 pipes though....

I havent touched the voltage on the card. Do i do this via the normal motherboard bios? or is it done on the card somehow?

My setup is basically:

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2Ghz running at 2.2Ghz for now... only built the machine this week)
1 Gb Micron Ram (2x512MB PC3200)
1.5Tb hard discs
Pioneer 108, and 110 DVDRW's
SCSI controller and drive

All stable....

Saying that, I don't play many games... mainly a quaker / doom freak and the odd need for speed game..... an hour or two a week to be honest.....

Thanks for the info

Jav

470 on the core is kind of low. Are you sure you have R423 not R430, cause as far a I know R423 are pretty good overclockers, R430 --not really
Which ati tool are you using, also which bios?

you should have an r423, as even an r430 don't usually go higher than 450mhz but 475 is kinda low compared to what i have seen on most. What bios did you use to unlock your pipes as this could make a difference too. I would try just overclocking the core first and see what the max is without any mem overclock. Whats your cards temps at overclock as this can affect your scores too, maybe with better cooling a Zalman 700 or ATIsilencer 5.2 you might get better scores. If you can manage 500mhz plus on the core and 500mhz or higher on the mem at the same time you can use the x800xt bios that uses the 2.0ns mem. I can go pretty high with mine but as trogg and others say its a mixed bag. With 16p and 475 core you still will beat an r430 core based card. Congrats on the mod and post your 3dmark scores.

Downloading 3mark now to see what I get from the card and machine.
I don't know the bios revision, I used the bios detailed in the modding guide http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/127/images/Connect3D.X800GTO_16P.Samsung20.bin
and couldnt tell you what version it is... how do i find this out ?
don't have any info on the card temps either.... will have to download a tool to find out...
..... I'll be back....

Thanks

Jav

ATItool will show you your temps as, far as what bios ,if you used the modded 16p bios from the website thats the one. Since you have already successfully flashed in Dos you can use ATIwinflash if you want to try any future flashing as you do not need to worry about preseving your pipe settings anymore and its window based, but don't try flashing anything else just as of yet till we can see if we can get your clocks higher. Use 3dmark05 for benching as 06 will give you a low score cause of sm2 support. You can use Rabit to get more info on your current bios.

Can't seem to find the temps anywhere using ATI-Tool, and think i may have found the reason for poor speed..... PSU output.....

My machine is running a 500W PSU, but with 6 hard drives, and 2 DVDRW's and a whole raft of other PCI cards and fans stuck in the tower, my PSU voltages are a bit low....

I've ordered a higher powered PSU and will try OC'ing the card again after I've installed it.....

Unusual anomoly..... since flashing the bios on the card, and installing the new catalyst 6.2 drivers, my machine has shutdown intermittently 3 times in 2 to 3days... again this might be PSU so will see if at stabilises out before I mess about with the card anymore....

Thanks
Jav

I think you diagnosed your PSU problem accurately; if your older PSU doesn't have a PCI/E power plug and you are using the provided adapter on one of the chains with alot of add ons and hardware your card isn't getting enough juice. I bet you get alot better clocks once you get the new PSU. You probably would have got better clocks before the flash as the more pipes will also suck more juice.

Totaly agree :D :respect:

PSU should be here by Tuesday... will fit it then, and have another go for wednesday at the latest.... thanks for the feedback lads...

I got mine @16pp 550/565 w/Zalman VF700Cu, but i'm thinking of buying the X1900XT and flashing it to XTX speeds, hehe.

hey guys i got my second connect3d x800gto ( first one fried) .. tried to unlock but no matter what type of bios i used from techpower. the pipeline stays at 12 pipe... any idea? or this card cant be unlock at all?

I have a question. =) I have a C3D x800gto, 16ppl is active. It runs great on 520/540. I tried to raise iot even more, to 560/600. Well. Memory starting to give me nasty triangles, but what is worst.... The whole thing just freez up, than reset it to the bios default settings. You think I just found the limit of the card core and mem?

Newer Connect3d GTOs have been locked on-die so there is no more modding, I think Connect3d just didn't plan to sell cards that could mod and unless you find a place with old stock your only route is the GTO2 by Sapphire. Post your fuse data and we will know for sure if the card can be modded.

Make sure your power connector is connected right to the 12v rail, it could be too that your PSU isn't giving enough juice for better clocks (if your psu has the pci/e connector, nevermind), I know i did better clockwise after upgrading my PSU, and it could bwe you found your cards limit. Aftermarket cooling by either the Zalman 700 or ATIsilencer 5.2 might give a little extra in clocks. And it could be you found your cards limit, however if you focus more on core clock instead of mem you may find a better performance boost from a higher core clock and sometimes the core clock is relative to the mem clock, in other words i would keep your mem clock at around 500 and see if your core will go higher. Do a search on mem timings as this is another setting you can tool around in. ATI tray tools is the app to use if you want to change these settings.
