The motherboard for my Laptop has stop working. So I am thinking of using the other components of the laptop to make a desktop computer.
The components of my Laptop I wish to use are:
-The Optical Drive
-The Hard Drive
-Ram (4gb)
-The CPU (Intel Core 2 duo 2.53ghz)
-Sound Card
Is it possible for me to use these components in a desktop? And does anyone have any further advice.

The hard drive might be ok,maybe the cpu too,but not the ram unless they're full size sticks, not lappy sized ones.Whats the connection on the sound card? pci?

Thanks. There are converters for the RAM though. Scrap that about the sound card ill just buy a new one. The CPU is not Core 2 duo (my bad) its Centrino 2 2.53ghz if that changes anything.
Cheers Lachlan

Can you see the CPU model on the top of it? I know they did make some desktop boards for mobile CPU's, but that was a while ago. If you get the model number, you may be able to search for a MB.

I haven't seen any SODIMM converters to DDR slots, but they surely could be out there.

You may need to get converters for the optical and HDD if they're IDE

The processor in laptop use a different socket then desktops, so you are out of luck there.

The cost of the converters will likely be more than the cost of new RAM.

If the CPU is a socket P, there are some mini-ITX motherboards that will work but it's not really cost effective (start at over $200 USD). I'd try to find a barebones laptop and put the components in that instead if I wanted to salvage anything ---or try to sell the parts on Ebay.
What kind of laptop is it?

+1:toast:

Get another MB. Or, buy the same lappie that has crapped out on someone who is selling their's for little or nothing. Scavenge parts you need sell the rest on TPU, ebay, or wherever.:)
