Cooler Master Hyper T2 good enough for i7 8700k?

Long story short is my gigabyte motherboard died and gigabyte is screwing me on the RMA.

They are claiming they won't replace it due to physical damage which is bullshit.

So I am using some christmas money to buy a new motherboard cpu and of course ram.

I've got just enough money to buy a 8700k and the cheapest motherboard on newegg and an 8gb stick of RAM.

I've got the hyper t2 already around.

I bought it for a friend's computer but he didn't need it.

The plan is to eventually use my h80 on the 8700k but the intel mounting hardware is currently packed away in storage.

I just want to get my main rig up as fast as possible because I'm stuck using a super slow old laptop that can't even play youtube videos!

So can I get away with using the T2 for a couple months until I can get into my storage unit and unload it to get the h80 mounting hardware?

Try it and see. Make sure you apply a proper (thorough but as thin as possible) layer of TIM (thermal interface material) between the thoroughly cleaned mating surfaces.

And remember, it is the case's responsibility to provide an adequate supply of cool air flowing through the case. The CPU cooler need only toss the CPU's heat into that air flow.

So monitor temps (I use and recommend Core Temp) and if too high, see if you can improve your case cooling by adding a case fan or replacing case fans with bigger/better fans). Typically, you want good front-to-back or bottom-to-top flow.

If you want to overclock an 8700k, at least get a midrange board to go with it. You can't push the VRM hard on the cheap ones, and if you don't use a topflow cooler on that CPU (H80/water is even worse for VRM airflow than a tower) you will sooner or later have instability up to dead components.

On a cheap / low end board? Screw water and stick a Dark Rock TF on there. Problem solved, at least most of it. It'll be just as cool as an H80 anyway. Its not like AIO's make a difference versus high end air, but you do win in terms of lower noise profiles and less hassle / points of failure. (Suffice to say, I like air)

I'm actually very curious what board you want to pair this with. Either way I think you'll get the point: don't make the mistake of thinking this 8700k is somehow similar to the i5 2500k below. With OC you can be looking at a 150w CPU versus 65-77w.

Don’t cheap out on the board. You will regret it and from reviews on that particular cooler, I don’t think it’s much of a step up over stock

LOL - its fine, just don't do any heavy multitasking on your spanking new 6c12t top end mainstream CPU.

In other words, get something else The irony of @thebluebumblebee 's comment just struck me
