I plan on adding some stuff to cool key elements of lmy computer. I decided on 3 "gadgets" to cool off my computer.

1) Forcetake JTS-0006 (around 35$)

2) Vantec DDR-A1C Iceberg Copper (around 12$)

3) ATI Silencer 5 rev 2 (around 30$)

SUM: 70$ (rough estimate)

Advantage: Way cooler graphics card, mainboard and ram! Yet don't know how big an effect it will have on ram.

Worth it?

I think all of it is worth it except maybe the Vantec for the RAM. It's only $12 so you could try it out.

I heard the ram sinks work in the sense that for example one guy has BSOD's and when he installed those he stopped having BSOD's. So from that standpoint I think they DO spread heat and will stabilize system. And like you say for 12$, eh!

The fan is close to tha actual chipset, which might get in the way of long graphics cards or SLI.

So..._33, are you getting those 3 that you mentioned?

It's a plan I have, maybe I'll order from Newegg and save some cash on shipping all in one and also combined deals.

OK I got the memory heat spreaders! Zoomed to a placed called OEM Express. The Vantec really work! The memory, as I am typing is at 3.0v at DDR468 cas 3-3-3-7. Bandwidth in Everest is 7.3 GB/s read and write. Yay! Zero errors in MEMTEST86+ even at DDR470 3-3-3-7...

2 other steps before nirvana! Kidding... The CPU cooler could get bumped.

Cool...I'm planning on not removing my IHS anymore...my Big Typhoon might break it because of it's weight.

My thoughts

ATI Silencer 5 rev 2 - This thing is great!

I scraped off the GPU pad and used AS5 but left the RAM thermal pads alone. My idle stayed the same around 31 Celcius (no surprise there), BUT my max load temp went from 61.9C to 44.3C.

I have a Connect 3D Radeon x800 GTO and I measured the load temps with ATI Tool after playing an hour of BF2 (stock speeds).

As for a CPU Cooler I am gonig to try an "ARCTIC COOLING ACFZP64 FREEZER 64 PRO". I like what I have read and the fact that I can aim the exhaust from the fan directly at my rear case fan.

Don't know if you are interested in how I installed my Silencer but here it is anyhow:
I peeled off the GPU pad with my hand, used Q-tips and Methyl Hydrate to clean the leftovers up (from the heatsink and GPU), then I lapped the copper on the heatsink with 600 grit sandpaper, cleaned the area off with a damp cloth, used Q-tips and methyl again to clean the area, used BrassO to clean up the copper, placed a bead of AS5 on the GPU and then put the ATI Silencer on. I hand tightened the nuts and then carefully used a screwdriver to tighten them till they hit the end of the bolts threads.

Anyhow good luck and feel free to msg me if you want!

Sometimes, people say if you have copper on your RAM, since it conducts heat from the RAM, you need a fan to blow on it, so try this out:

It might be in one of your stores there.

Heck, use what I have if you don't have heatspreaders already, & wish to air cool (fan's built INTO the heatspreader):

Here's an "interesting" one, ram heatsink with heatpipes built-in:

And, then there's the "extreme" approach, liquid cooled RAM:

Definately a big appreciated help as the ATI Silencer is comming for this weekend or maybe only next week. I'll try to follow your steps. I only have grid 1000 sandpaper thoe. For cleaning the paste I have something similar than what you used. Will definately see how tight the copper is to the overall cooler.

I think it will help cooling off my whole system as the ATI card generates a hell of a lot of heat inside the system housing.

Excellent guide you have there. Thoe I do have the Cantec Iceberg copper ram heat spreaders now. Thanks for the knowledge! The Thermal Take one is awesone!

You should try this one out, it looks pretty good, and good performance, I'll get it whenever I order from newegg again, so I'm not spending half of the money on shipping.

I know you're gonna love how well it cools. The lower load temps should extend the life of the vid card - possibly even with OCing.

This is where I obtained a quick overview on removing thermal paste:
http://www.overclockers.com/tips1116/

I didn't do the whole freeze the paste and then remove it thing because I wasn't sure how that would affect the RAMs thermal pads - as I did not remove those. I found it came off pretty easily anyhow without much effort. I used Methyl Hydrate instead of Isopropyl as the hardware store I went to didn't have any.

A link for lapping can be found in Step 7. 1000 grit should be fine. I used a small rectangular block of wood with the sandpaper wrapped around it to sand with. I only sanded the spot where the GPU would sit for perhaps 10-15 mins as it was pretty smooth to begin with. I removed all the machine marks in the copper and by the time I was through it was almost mirror shiny.

I did not use Carb Cleaner at all on the heatsink but perhaps it might be a good idea. I had this black stuff that was coming off with the sandpapering.

Anyhow do yourself a favour and buy some latex type gloves. I started using them for everything now - get yer minds out of the gutter. I'm talking from working on cars to lapping/cleaning heatsinks.

I'll be getting my CPU heatsink this weekend so that'll give me something to do next week :)

Not that I'm an expert or anything but if you have any questions feel free to ask. I might be able to help.

Thanks. I don't know if it's a "great guide" or anything like that, but it does show examples of what you COULD do for RAM cooling - from air, to heatpipes & air, to water cooling...

Whatever works for you & again, you're welcome.

It works well enough, for my purposes, & assures that air flows over the heatspreaders...
