IS an Opteron better than a comparative processor running at the same speeds, busses, etc. ?

What other processors are you looking at? Opterons are generally server processors, but 'better' is subjective. It depends on your application.

Opterons are identical to Athlons mostly. The 2xx series can run in pairs though and the 8xx series with 7 brothers.

Just comparing speeds. Basicly, I mean to ask, because it is built for a server, will it preform better than another processor of the same Ghz and Fsb ?

IMO the two chips listed will 'perform' about the same. The opty is 200MHz slower, but has 512kb more cache.

Now if we are talking about potential, the opteron has a TON of potential. The other...not so much.

Opty's are server chips because they are STABLE (and I think they have a higher max temp spec?)

Opty's overclock GREAT because they are server chips...(see the logic :p)

EDIT: LOL ones socket 939, the other is AM2....That makes a bit of difference I believe (but not a ton). AM2 is faster

Yes, in that case, I would go with the opty as well.

lol i just noticed i misspelled that :).

But on the issue, if I am going for a truly powerful and stable system, is it worth it to shell out the extra money for a server processor and motherboard, or should I just stick to desktop ?
