Just bought an open box MSI RX 6800 Gaming X Trio from Amazon for $562 after taxes, and it is a very good overclocker. I don't usually get lucky with silicon (3 previously owned Zen2 CPUs could not do 1800 FCLK, 970/1070/2070super could not handle core+100mhz) but this GPU handles everything maxed in wattman. I need the cores and don't necessarily want a pure gaming chip like the x3d, and also don't think the 5900x is that much of an uplift (could be wrong). Would a 5950x provide a 20% uplift in gaming performance over a 3900X?

Cyberpunk, Apex, Warzone, AAA games @ 1440p 144hz

No.

Cyberpunk is GPU limited. Warzone is shit code and APEX, like Warzone are both on a lower server tickrate than you run your FPS. Pointless exercise. You dont really get much from CPU upgrades on the same GPU, in general you have enough or just too much.

If you want to upgrade at least wait for Raptor Lake / Ryzen 7000. Or get that X3D after all... but I doubt you will see much with a 6800 if its fully loaded. If its not... sure. Question is if that is usable though: 160 >> 200 FPS isnt exactly going to matter.

Run it and see

Game wise not that much difference between a 5900x and the 5950x. You can get a idea of the performance difference by looking at past reviews for said processors. The uplift will be noticeable depending on your “ usage “.

at 1440p i think your better choice was to spend more on the gpu.
6800xt or rtx 3080. you wont gain too much at 1440p for upgrading your cpu. even though that rx 6800 at that price its a nice deal.

Thank you for the insight! Waiting does seem like the smart decision.

Thanks most of the stuff I could find was a little dated, drivers have matured and whatnot.
