After downloading the newest version of CPU-Z, 1.84.0 x64, I am greeted with an error code message everytime I attempt to start the program 0x241(577). After bringing up the log it does load the program but the mainboard, memory, SPD, and graphics sections are completely empty and greyed out. Bench function appears to work fine.

I am on W7 SP1 x64 with ZERO updates or Direct X/.Net Framework add ons installed. I would appreciate advice on where my computer is falling short. The log is posted below.

I would appreciate advice on where my computer is falling short.
With CPUz. If the last versions did not show this error, and you have made no hardware changes, I would not assume the problem is with your computer.
I am on W7 SP1 x64 with ZERO updates or Direct X/.Net Framework add ons installed.
 What do you mean, "ZERO" updates? That would suggest your W7 OS is almost 9 years behind in updates. That could be your problem too.

Aha, but yet it functions as an OS considerably better than after M$ thought to lessen its capabilities and speed considerably starting during the W10 forced upgrade period into current time.

I considered CPU-Z was requesting an updated component or other security workaround I didn't have. Will wait for 1.84.1 to see if matter improve.

Thanks for the help

Nah! Not even. In no way did Microsoft lesson W7's capabilities so people would upgrade to W10. That is just falsehoods and rumormongering by Microsoft and W10 haters. Contrary to what those people want you and everyone to think, Microsoft is not that stupid that they would alienate their client base in that manner.

While it is true a very few users had some problems after some updates, later updates, especially driver updates (which are the responsibility of the HW makers, not MS) fixed and fined tune W7 so it clearly runs better fully updated than with no updates applied. Not to mention, much more secure. But that is for a different discussion.

I considered CPU-Z was requesting an updated component or other security workaround I didn't have. Will wait for 1.84.1 to see if matter improve.
Or try a previous version. If no problems, I recommend you submit a bug report.

Bill, my experience speaks to a very different reality. I did a fresh install of W7 SP1 on two identical machines. One spent a week churning through the Windows Update cycle and the other never even saw the internet. I then spent some time cleaning up the second machine. The difference was not subtle or easily mistakable. This was even before the Spectre upates that knocked an easy 10% off performance. I may try again some day to see if you are right about it running better now.

I will send CPU-ID an error report.

My experience is with 100s and 100s of machines, not 1 or 2. And the fact yours were identical is both good and bad - bad because it represents just one configuration out of potentially more than a billion. A week does not allow Windows to learn user patterns to properly configure the various fetch routines that speed up Windows. Spectre only recently came out. I can go on and on demonstrating why that little scenario is woefully inadequate to draw any conclusion, let alone the conclusion you came to.

Not to mention W7 was out 6 years before W10 (SP1 came out 5 years before W10) so to conclude applying Windows updates to a fresh install of W7 slowed it down just does not make any sense. Many 100s of millions of users would have been complaining big time - and their complaints would have been way over-amplified and over-exaggerated by all those MS bashers and haters in the IT Press and on forums like this. That didn't happen. And MS did not slow W7 down so folks would move to W10 either. They did a lot of nagging things, but they didn't degrade the performance of W7.

I will send CPU-ID an error report.
Great! The only way many of these developers learn of problems is via bug reports. Complaining on forums rarely works. They typically don't have time to visit and watch forums. I would not expect a personal reply but hopefully the next release will not show any problems.

Earlier Versions of CPUz could be Run as a Standalone and i believe the latest Version does also
Try Downloading it again and Run it as a Standalone ( ie do not install ).

I had the same problem a couple days ago and that fixed it. I thought it was odd since I have never had issues with CPUz and been using this Win7 install for benching for a long time.

Interesting since that WU was released in March of 2015 that it would affect CPUz now.

Hope it works with nomdeplume's system too.

Nope, another error code from the update that was supposed to fix the first one. Whereas I may not have updated my OS I have gone far in removing unecessary services and Windows components. I reinstall biannaully so your trick will get used.

Wow. That has not been necessary since migrating from W98 to XP. Oh well. To each his own, I guess. Just don't become a threat to the rest of us by allowing your systems to become compromised and used to distribute spam and malware, or as zombies in a bot army conducting DDoS attacks. That would not be cool.

I only reinstall if something is really borked that it can't be isolated. That happened in 2016 for me, been perfect since lol

Right. As a "last ditch" attempt. And that makes sense. But modern versions of Windows don't need to be "periodically" re-installed like ancient versions did.

Frankly, reinstalling often doesn't fix the problem. Nothing is learned to prevent recurrence of the problem. And of course, the system it set back months, if not years in security.

Oh believe me, there are people who believe that Microsoft has purposely tried to sabotage Windows 7 to force people to go to Windows 10. These people are everywhere. You can't talk to these people. Then there's the people who believe that recent Windows updates have put NSA backdoors into the OS. If you ask for proof that this happened they then point to some thing that connects Microsoft to something called Prism and it quickly devolves from there. Yeah...

98Se/2000, really didnt need periodic reinstalls either if maintained right, ME did though

ME was really more like 98SE than not. But it was buggy. If it worked, it worked fine. If not, then perhaps a reinstall was needed. I was actually one of the few who had good luck with ME! :)

But to your point, every OS, "if maintained right" could last forever (until the hardware died) without needing a periodic reinstall.

1.84 is messed up - Have the same errors myself and just using 1.83 until the next release is done.
In reality it should work regardless because CPU-Z is used for older stuff too running older OS versions such as XP for subs at the bot. I believe this has already caught the attention of the developer and they should get it right before long, certainly with with the next release I'd think.

So back to my original post where the OP asked for "advice on where my computer is falling short."

My answer then is as it is now, "with CPUz".

Yes - GPU-Z itself has had issues with a new release too, it happens and you just have to work around it or keep using the previous version.
ATM there is an issue with GPU-Z too, that should be fixed before long.

Personally with CPU-Z I always use the standalone version of it.

Sometimes with an updated version of a program/utility support for something gets broken and it has to be worked out by the developer, bug reports do help if it can be done.

ME was buggy that I Kept 98SE
