I have to sell my Samsung B die kits. (4x8gb patriot blackout 4133@4000 cl15) because i need more ram, there are projects that require more than 32gb. And i don't want to buy another expensive kits. (i need at least 64gb)
So i decided to use cheap ECC REG dimms, i modded my bios to the older microcode that supports ecc reg. I can sell the patriot dimms at a good price.
I have a lot of ecc reg dimms in my other workstations, so it is much better to use it than unbuffered dimms.

First i have to test 4x16gb Samsung m393a2g40eb1-cpb (2Rx4 2133) Samsung E-die dimms. I tested it and runs fine at 3200mhz (default cl22 timings), i think it maxed out at 3400-3600 or maybe at 4000?. (there is a few youtube reviews for samsung e die)
139440_3200.jpg
But i also have 6x16gb Hynix Dimms hma82gr7djr4n-xn (1Rx4 3200mhz ) Hynix D die (DJR?) die dimms. not yet tested.
Samsung modules are dual rank, hynx are single.
The goal will be 8x16gb modules so i think i need another 4x samsung or 2x hynix modules but these are cheap (~15 usd each 16gb dimms, the b die 8gb dimms was 35usd each)
But I will try to see if the 4+4 mixed module works. (but i dont think i can mix different rank modules)
For cooling i got two 8cm silent arctic p8 fans over the dimms.

So which modules should I use and start overclocking?

Unpopular opinion I guess, but the whole point of ECC memory is stability, so you don't overclock it.
At JEDEC spec, you should be able to mix and match, but better not if you go outside of JEDEC spec.

With the non xeon cpu the ecc function is not working. (windows reports it with "wmic memphysical get memoryerrorcorrection" command) I also have a xeon ES for this motherboard that works with ecc function but that is a lower clocked 10 core like 7900x.
When the ecc is working it makes overlocking much easier. It can correct some of the error that caused by too much overclocking. (i have overclocked DDR3 dimms in chinese x99 motherboards with xeons that has this ecc working fine)
But my i9 7980xe not supports ecc function so it is runs like a non ecc dimm but with the extra register chips.

The extra register buffer is not interfere with the overclocking. (just make extra heat)

after some tweaking

It boots on 3600 but not sable, i think needs more voltage.

Hynix DJR is the winner. Just a fast test at stock timings, 1.35v

And with 6 sticks is way faster (and 8 sticks will be more faster)

DJR can clock extremely high if you put higher volts into it. Like, 5000+ on binned memory sticks high. E-die can do something similar, but it may require only 1.5V or less.

Yeah but that's binned DJR on high end PCBs. This one's standard green JEDEC fare with ECC. Honestly not even sure what the point of OCing is here aside from amusement - platform is Skylake-X not Comet Lake or Rocket Lake Gear 2, and the actual ECC functionality looks to be dead weight on their hardware anyway.

I think it'd be fun to try. Feels like a just-cause-they-can situation anyway.

If AIDA is correct (not sure since I don't use AIDA for that), it looks like the Samsung is 8Gb E-die (iirc kinda mediocre, 8Gb D-die might have been better performer).

But the Hynix sticks are 16Gb, not 8Gb DJR that everyone loves. I know that new 16Gb CJR behaves roughly analogous to 8Gb CJR but better on freq and worse on timings. Haven't heard of 16Gb DJR before. I would have said that 4000 is impressive for a green stick, but at CL22 still needing 1.35V is not particularly amazing.

When I first built this rig I bought two sets of Patriot Patriot Viper 4 Blackout 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 4133MHz. And it worked at 4000mhz CAS16-18-18-38 1.5v, but my motherboard not liked it and i can't reduce the TRFC (600 was the lowest stable). (the two kits was 160 usd)
But when I needed more than 32 GB, I have to decide how to upgrade. I didn't want to buy two more expensive kits.
The only way to increase ram cheaply is with used ecc reg dims from old servers. (15-16 Usd for one 16gb stick)
That's why I use these ecc reg dimms. And I'm overclocking just because I don't want to lose much performance, and overlocking is free (but cost time)
And my secondary workstations also works with DDR4 ECC REG (HP Z440 and Dell T5810)
So it is all about the price/performance/capacity balance, not just the performance. I don't care what it looks like, what the brand is, etc.
