Yet another game where the 6890xt 6900xt is barely beating the 3080 at 1080p/1440p when it used to be faster then a 3090.

AMD has gotta get on it, there's no reason 6000 series owners should be missing out on game optimization.

1675113164498.png

This pretty much looks like its always been for me all of those are giving the same game play experience. And no one is going to notice the 100.5 vs 108.9 with the 6900xt vs 3090.

1675113261686.png

The difference between the 6900XT 71.4 vs 3090 78.9 also not noticeable.

And I seriously doubt a game ready driver from AMD will make much of a difference here.

optimised it seems

Looks pretty horrendous to me, most cards can't hit 60 at 4K with no RT ? That's insane, the game is linear, not much happening on screen most of the time, graphics don't look exactly earth shattering.

A very lazy article. I wish outlets would do setting performance sensitivity and qualify that with subjective perspectives. "Ultra" settings are almost always unoptimal except for a few graphical effects. Much Digital Foundry and some other outlets.

That said, the performance of the game is bad for the visual quality. I am shocked how well it performs with AMD cards though.

Ouch. Even rtx 4090 will struggle to keep at above 60 fps in 4k and that's with out Ray tracing. That was fast 4090 going from super fast 4k monster to degrade to a 60 fps card at best.

Either this game is badly optimized or I will expect some next gen graphics quality.

I mena feel free to look through games from november and earlier, you'll see a trend of the 6900 being above the 3090 at 1440p/1080p.

but you know, its OK, lack of optimization for older cards is only bad when nvidia does it.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
So which is the better experience on a mid-range GPU like a 6600XT or 3060Ti?
  • This remaster, 50-55fps at 1080p, and with all the bugs associated with any new release from EA.
  • The 15-year-old original, patched, fixed, running flawlessly at 4K60 with mods and ReShade etc.
It's a genuine question; I own the original and have never played it because I boycotted Origin for a good decade - but looking at youtube playthroughs of the original, it doesn't really look so old that the graphics are immersion-breaking. A dark corridor isn't something game engines were struggling with in 2008 and there's only so much modern game engines bring to the table....

I think the new game looks really good. It looks much better than similar Frostbite games on the PS4 except for perhaps Battlefront 2.

Thanks Wizzard, I'm an idiot. I missed the section with screenshots that shows Low versus Ultra. You don't necessarily need barcharts for that part (though would be nice), but a little headsup on the other section "FOR LOW SETTINGS FPS, CHECK THE PREVIOUS SECTION" etc.

Thanks! :)

Nice article!

With just a 3080 TI I maintain above 60 99% of the time at 4K Max with Ray tracing using dlss on quality. With balanced dlss I'm not even close to ever dropping below 60 FPS.

Thanks, I worked on it for 3 days .. would you be interested in producing this kind of content for us? Subjective perspective? Just play on lowest, turn off all upscaling tech and VRS, it looks crisp and great and the gameplay isn't affected anyway

yep nothing earth shattering nor high performances with a beast card, but still... better than Forspoken
(and comparing with the original, i ran it a bit just for fun after that performance analysis, it's still quite good )

also ... 4K ... yeah disappointing, luckily for me i am more into 1440/1620p (even tho the fps would be sub 50 with my RX 6700 XT, although i would not run it on Ultra even with RT off ... as i mentioned, not much difference between Ultra with or without RT and Low settings )

sad i did not wait a bit and took a 6900/6950XT  1440p at 60+ fps on Ultra would be fine :D oh, well... it's fine.

How is the game compared to the original? Did they change much apart from the graphics?

I have the original, but I've never tried it. I wanted to, but then I heard news of this coming out, and now I'm not sure which one to try.

Graphic look okay, but the sound design is fantastic according to DF review, also the interactive environments are neat.

Once again upscaling come to the rescue when people want to play at 60FPS+, even if RT is not enabled LOL.

Funny, the original still looks great and runs on a literal potato.
I have it installed on my Galaxy S21 Ultra lol, plays buttery smooth and looks great on such a high PPI display.

VRAM requirements are interesting, both camps cards requiring >8gb at 4k, yet the 3070 seems to not really care vs the 2080Ti...

Interested to check this out but won't be shelling out much if any money for it, too many other good games coming soon.

The new game is great. We only wish all our favorite games had such a quality remaster. Imagine Mass Effect 1 had the same treatment.

Yes, you do need an RTX 4080 to hit stable 1080p/120fps, but that makes sense, they are next gen graphics. If you want to play on ultra with RT and volumetric fog everywhere, it takes a beast.

We've only had 3 next gen only games released on PC so far, Gotham Knights, Forspoken, and Dead Space. Dead Space is unquestionably the best of them.

The FPS is so low on literally every card. Is that by design or is there a driver update or something to get those FPS up a bit? (A bit here means like double them)
It is pretty bad for the game since it is not glass shattering great looks nor overwhelmingly pretty.

I am not into all these remakes. To me, this is basically a quick and dirty way for game developers to make money while doing a fraction of the usual work required. It is also quite surprising why the Frostbite engine that is already quite old, is so taxing even on a RTX 4090 that is a few months old and significantly faster than the RTX 3090 Ti.

I am definitely out with my puny GTX1650....my resolution is 2560x1080, means I need at least 2060/2070 to have *some* eye candy.

I feel like the VRAM between red and green camp is kinda weird. It grows from 2.5% difference @1080p to ~13% @4K or so in favour of the green team. I guess it's a driver's thingy in the red camp.

Its totally unimpressive to look at lmao. Not sure what you're smoking, must be some fumes from the card's thermal pads or something.

The original basically already looked mighty fine and had the perfect vibe going on, an upscale and some extra fog won't change that. To be fair I barely understand why they had to remaster this to begin with, whereas ME1 looks truly ancient and still does. Strange isn't it how the original asset quality still seems to be the defining factor... :) And they upscaled it... Mind blown!

And... Forspoken is 'next gen' to you as well? Oh my. I'll reserve my comment on that one :D

This, its lazy as fuck all the way, but apparently that's fine in some minds. Its a bit different when a game truly gets better playability and features, but that's not the case here. Its as on-rails as it used to be, a perfect copy with a higher resolution and absolutely crap performance to make it happen. Wooptiedoo

Another massive surprise for some despite the fact the card has terrible bandwidth... Common sense isn't common these days... Although truth be told, many here on TPU did say this was in fact an x70 or x60ti at best. It takes one poorly optimized title to bring it to its knees despite a powerful core.

Funny to see a 10GB card bookended by two 16GB cards too, which even nudges ahead at 4K.

maybe really raw graphics, but presentation to me is MUCH better in the dead space, the entire sense of space is just way better, its an actual ship you are on, not some linear hallway with bright yellow spikey walls strategically placed......

so no, I dont agree with you at all.

and dead space is and was just in general a much better game, hell Callisto Protocol does not even have a right to exist imo.
You don't know what you are talking about.
Do you know why the mechanics of calisto protocol and dead space are so similar ? BECAUSE BOTH GAMES WERE CREATED BY THE SAME PERSON!
I completed Calisto and in some missions i was amazed how good the graphics were, it even got Digital Foundry's top 3 award of best graphics of 2022.
Dead Space has the background of what was a great game at the time ( 2013 ), since then many things have changed and if you objectively compare them you won't say Dead Space is the better game, you are biased because you probably played the game in 2013 and have fond memories of it.

That right there. He had his dream done with the original Visceral Games team under the IP rights to DS. I feel like when EA re-purposed the team and the IPs are still held by them, Glen Schofield just wanted to make a DS4, but neither is the original team on board, nor he has the IP rights or arguably the same resources of EA, so he just wrote a love letter with Calisto Protocol. But the story just doesn't pack a punch maan, the lore just isn't there to support the rest...IMO.

Apart from Frostbite being an ancient turd, I wonder if a lot of the performance issues aren't due to the necromorphs themselves. They literally have skin that can be shot off, for example. (I watched a stream where the playter went to shoot off a necro's head and accidentally shot it in the face, which revealed skull underneath). This is especially noticeable when you set the necros on fire.

No.

Callisto Protocol is extremely poor compared to Dead Space. Graphics are only one aspect of a game and in Callisto's case, pretty much the only positive aspect. The story is rubbish, the gameplay is linear repetitive rubbish. Callisto Protocol is objectively not a good game.

Games aren't remembered for their graphics unless they're literally a generation ahead like Crysis, they're remembered for their story and gameplay. That's why people remember and love Dead Space, it's why the game will continue to be remembered and loved, and it's why Callisto Protocol will be all but forgotten a year from now.

Dead Space is very much a demonstration of the whole development team being greater than the sum of its parts. Glen Schofield was only one part of what made it a great game and Callisto Protocol conclusively proves this.
