Seems that Dell/Alienware has decided that what gamers really want is a free copy of Valve's Portal and for Steam to be pre-installed on the system.

"With its automatic game updates, easy friend finding and the ability to play your Steam purchased games on any PC, Valve has helped simplify PC gaming to make it more enjoyable," said Frank Azor, Dell senior manager of product planning.

"It's for those reasons we selected Steam to compliment the Alienware experience."

Hmmmm ... old Uncle Kreij wonders what kind of deal Dell has struck with Valve for this little foray into digital distribution.

I like Steam. I don't really agree that pre-installing it is appropriate. If it was an option, that would be better. Of course it really doesnt effect me because I don't see myself buying a Dell machine anyways. The only thing that would make Steam super uber IMHO would be the ability to trade our "virtual properties" (games) amongst ourselves.

I think that they should just put a link along with all of the other bloatware links on the desktop or something that leads to a Steam download.

Actually as i think dell is kinda overpriced than you can buy same kinda hardware from some where else and then buy the games with the remaining money :p

What gamers really want??? maybe Alienware can drop $1000 bucks from their price tag and make themselves a little affordable ;)

Laptops from anywhere except dell are still better

Good thing I didn't like Dell or I would be quite angry with that. Steam = DRM.

Steam is great man. Ford I know you hate DRM but man STEAM IS AWESOME!

1.) I don't really mind steam, it is pretty minor compared to the other bloatware that is installed on the computer.
2.) If, and that is a big if, I was buying one of these machines. I'd just format the drive and install a fresh clean copy of the OS the day I got it. I probably wouldn't let it boot once before formatting it.

is buying an Alienaware laptop / pc worth it though? ooooh steam.....ooooh portal. Targeting the blind.

There is nothing wrong with STEAM. It does what it should and makes life easier mostly. For me anyway.

No, Alienware PC's cost as much as a small car. You can build your own and download Steam for free and get portal for $20.

Putting a free copy of Portal on every machine doesn't justify the price at all.

Steam is awesome tho.

imo you are a fool to blow money on an alienware, srry but seriously a fool.
