I'm trying to run Kodi on a Windows-based HTPC over WiFi and I wanted to use my phone (with Kore) as a remote control cause it's a little more convenient than using just a wireless mouse.

was confused as to why my phone wasn't at all recognising the server, despite it being set up correctly, then I tried pinging the local ip address in Termux (used nmap too to no avail) and it read Destination host unreachable.

i could access the web-server from my desktop, and even ping it.
as a test, I tried putting the WiFi adapter that my HTPC uses into my own PC and disabled the Ethernet adapter just in case.

i tried pinging the IP again (after making sure it was the same in both ipconfig and on my router page) and it still didn't work.

I can ping from my desktop (ethernet) to my phone (wifi), and from my desktop (ethernet) to my HTPC (wifi), but can't ping from my phone (wifi) to my HTPC (wifi).

any suggestions? btw already tried using iptables, allowed it and it still doesn't work AP Isolation isn't turned on either

VPN? Also, try to log into router from your phone. Or at least get to the login page

Edit...
Try turning mobile data, 5g or LTE, or whatever, to off.

Global port forwarding?
nope, that makes it work when I use the public IP but I'm trying to access something using the local IP address of my device
currently I'm more focused on getting an actual ICMP response

logging into router works, no VPN on

tried aeroplane mode + wifi and still didn't work

as an update: I troubleshooted the issue with 3 lovely fellows from /r/sysadmin and we came to the conclusion that it's most likely an issue with my router, but we're all unsure

we noticed that ARP entries were missing and that after manually adding to both ARP tables the mac address of both the phone and the home theater PC respectively they were able to establish a connection and my issue got 'solved'

but that still leaves the mysterious missing ARP entries

honestly, might just be the router. I'm thinking of doing a factory reset on it, but I don't know how much that would help

I realised I can't ping my phone either from my main rig unless I ping my main rig first via termux on my phone, then it works

I can't ping my home theater PC at all using my phone, but I can do it just fine using my main rig. idk whats going on

looks like a factory reset might do the trick

Is everything connected to the same network? I have had problems in the past when I combined the 2.4 and 5GHz networks some (stupid) devices just wouldn't connect properly anymore.
Otherwise, just try traceroute/tracepath.

Everything was connected to the same network, same 2.4GHz / 5GHz (dual-band) access point

I just did a factory reset and everything works okay now, don't know why that even happened because everything seemed 'right' in the router settings

Earlier I also tried turning off the 5 GHz band and only using the 2.4 GHz one, and that solved nothing so I just think it was a firmware bug or something similar.

Yeah, the software/firmware probably choked on something. I still await the day when we'll have the first router that doesn't do that.

I'm just happy a factory reset did the trick, because I was worried it might've been something similar to what Huawei sometimes does on their routers (I've heard that even though AP Isolation is off sometimes it can block connections between multiple wireless devices)

Kinda funny you're having router issues.. A while ago i wanted a better Access Point/better WiFi and was using an old ASUS, built my own router which was pfSense, then OPNSense to counter Realtek adapter issues, then switched to Intel and Broadcom NICs... So, i did have a router that didn't take a crap on a software choke! Switched to a Netgear R8000 and installed FreshTomato, which initially softbricked and i had to connect to the RS232 header to repair it.. Embedded Linux devices can be good but...wow. BSD Unix is my go-to for a reason :)

Open Source...heh. Not worth the money! The WiFi radios constantly sit at 53C and the CPU at 72C...not exactly new but its a POS!

I also switched all my cables to Cat8, that helped with impedance mismatches and packet issues at least :)
