Hi everyone,
I recently killed my mainboard whilst playing around inside the case by shorting it out.
I have (had) the Asus X99-E WS which i was very happy with, especially for overclocking. Now i need a replacement and although i would normally be more than happy to go back to the same board, i thought i should ask you guys for your opinion on a replacement.

At the moment, i have the Asus X99-E WS in-mind, as well as the ASRock X99 Extreme 11.

My requirements are;
3-Way SLi-Crossfire. Sometimes i take out the PCi-E Flashmax and run the 3rd card, depends on what i am in the mood for.
1 Pci-e x8/16 slot for my Sound Card.
8 DiMM slots.

The rest should be pretty standard like, minimum 8x USB 3.0 (or more), 8 SATA3 Ports (or more), Dual Ethernet Ports and some decent overclocking ability.

I plan do re-use my existing XSPC water-cooling setup and i am willing to buy new mainboard/Chipset waterblocks. My case has no physical limitations and the rest of my hardware should suit just fine.

What do you guys have, what do you think, what would you buy in my position ?

My vote goes to Asus X99-E WS, I know people who use and recommend, has a stylish design in my opinion as I saw enough in this video:

Indeed 1+ to Asus X99-E WS and btw good video i really enjoyed it.

lol, i have to admit, i was not expecting her to actually do the build. It most certainly added a . . . dynamic.
I go with Sheldon on this one!

The Asus X99-E WS was a fantastic board, i really could not fault it.

You have the funds, take it to the next level and dual socket that shit and post a build log here so we have something to look at. :)

Are you indeed sure that the board is dead? Disconnect power and CMOS Battery for a few hours.

Change the switch over to the second BIOS.

You have tested it out?

I'm sorry... wha?.....

boobs......

Owning both the WS and the RVE, if you like to tinker in the bios and get a few extra toys, the RVE has much more to offer. Nothing against the WS, as it has enough to play with too, but I do miss a lot of the Tweaker goodies that the RVE has.

I have voted Asus Rampage.
Pick Asus, it doesn't matter which one but Get an Asus.

If I have something against:
Asrock, Gigabyte and MSI?
YES I DO:nutkick:

I did consider that, but I would rather not buy another 5960X. I usually wait for the next upgrade and sell what I have now to someone. In the past, I could never find someone interested in a $10k machine with dual CPU's.
Although, I would indeed love to have 2 x 5960X's running (I would never actually use that much power).

Yup, smoked up and smell of death! The fireworks style sparks were a bonus though.
I have test all my hardware in another pc and everything else is working fine. I consider myself fortunate to not have taken out anything else, especially my ram modules.

I do like my tweeks! I love nothing more than to tweek!
I have the RIV-E with the 3930K and I must say, I love that machine! At them moment I use it for my racing sim and I don't tweek it, just a simple overclock to 4.2Ghz. I will have to boot it up and remind myself what it was capable of.
I will also find the manual for the RVE when I get home and see what that is capable of. I recently put together a system for a friend whom went with the RVE but I never had the chance to play with it.

Thank you for your advice, much appreciated.

Word is that other OEMS like Gigabyte ASRock and MSI have better ram OC at the high-end because they wired their OC socket differently. When ASUS was the only brand with OC socket, I'd recommend them only too, for an OC'er, but now that nearly every brand has one, ASUS is looking a bit under-capable at the moment.

But I digress, that's only if you are into ram/cache OC'ing.

I just got the ASRock OC Formula/3.1; review will be up soon. It might make the RVE blush. Yet, ti is NOT red/black, so if colour scheme is important, then that'll limit your options for sure.

Oh god. Nothing like the smell of burnt electronics in the morning amirite?

One of my older bitcoin mining PSUs exploded on me, an old Antec. Man did it stink like toxic, carcinogenic waste. when it went...

Think this is why my X99-a with OC socket can't push my cache past 3.5Ghz with stability? It always seemed quite low to me, no amount of voltage will budge it...

But MSi have Military grade components *cough* and it says military all over it!

Yep, that'll likely be why. That was the case with early boards, for sure. Yet, some CPUs just don't OC cache very well. All my chips are different with max cache multi, for sure.

To Haytch, if'n you think about ASRock Extreme11, and high-end OC< you might want to reconsider. It is more of a stock-running board mated with a tonne of drives that can OC as an added bonus, rather than a board that is made for OC. OC Formula is their RVE equivalent, and same goes for your listed Gigabyte board... Gigabyte's to OC board doesn't have 8 ram slots, so you might miss out a bit of OC with that option.

Nope, I just watch Game Of Thrones :)

I love to overclock brother. I use to do it just to make my video render times shorter, or play games with those extra 5-100 FPS, now days, I just do it because I can. Even at standard clock speeds, 8 cores is 8 cores!

no pictures of the carnage

Yes, you have a point! I will post some pictures I took on the weekend. All of the pictures were taken outside because as soon as it happened, I disconnected everything and ran outside with the desktop, otherwise, my wife would kill me because I made the house stink like PC-Death and she would start with that incense crap that drives me up the wall.
I plan to paint my case since I will have taken most components out, I will be sure to take photos of the entire build process. Granted, it wont be a worthy link you would show your buddies like axgaming has supplied us all, but it may give everyone an idea of how huge the case is and how everything fits in nicely with room to move when complete.
