Difference between RealTemp and OCCT 2.0 temp reading.

I am trying to get my q6700 to 3.4ghz, and can get it to run with 1.45v. However, when OCCT 2.0 detects core temps in excess of 70c it stops, reporting CPU too hot. Thing is, while running Realtemp it says temps are about 5c cooler than what OCCT says. I don't think 65c is too excessive, better than 70c anyway, but which program to believe?

I think what you are seeing is due to Tjmax setting 5c lower in Real Temp. This is the reference value that it uses to calculate the temperature it reports. Problem is that Intel don't tell definate values for Tjmax for every chip - they say it can vary a bit from chip to chip. So utils like Real Teamp, Core Temp, etc have to make an educated guess of what value to use for TJmax; Real Temp seems to use 5c less for some chips.

OCCT is an excellent stability testing program. However, it's temp monitoring is not accurate. It always runs high. Trust me on this. I've used OCCT to test at least 10 different cpu's, all with temps that are much higher than realtemp, speedfan and everest. I just turn off the temp option in OCCT because of this.

Ah, OK, cheers for the info. So, in your opinion, so you think a max core temp of around 65c is safe on a 65nm chip? Or should I re-attach my cooler? I was hoping this Zalman CNPS9500 would improve my temps, but it seems to be around the same as my old Freezer 7 Pro.

well the Zalman CNPS9500 was good when it came out now theres better and cheaper HS out i havent used air in bit but im sure some one knows

and 65c is okay cuz not many apps push it that high

Good call, temps are more in line with Realtemp now. Now to see if I can pass at 3.4, LOL

65c under load will not hurt anything, and as DOM said your cpu would rarely see that high of load temps under normal operation.
