DivX team today announced that DivX video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) from Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the list of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.
We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3,
Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.
said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

I doubt it will raise the sails for the PS3...probably going to raise the price and its already too expensive for most:(

Why would they raise the price?

Yarg, I see a a mast asail over the horizon. It be calling me mateys Yo-ho!

PS3 is like the true EEEPC desktop

For 499$ you get a cheap linux computer your kids can do their homework on
a blu ray player
a game console
built in wireless
various flash card support.
Can act as a media center especially now that it has DivX support

With some major game releases around the corner, this system is seriously DYNOMITE

Fantastic new! Hopefully it also comes with XVID support. I know they are trying to support this format for HOME, because it is the smallest format with the best quality; making it easy to stream.

Well I can already play movies I burn with Divx and Xvid codecs. Odd that is wasnt ever supported before.

Divx has a bunch of legalities behind it. Xvid is opensource, but opensource to has some legalities behind it also.

No, that would be H.264.
