do you need to have .net framework 1.1 installed.... to install .net framework 2?

would it make a difference if i just installed 2 without having 1.1 (just thinking of saviing having to write over files etc when updating from 1.1 to 2 and not bothering with 1.1 at all)

Nope
.Net framework 1.1 is completely different from .Net 2.0.

It is better to not have them installed on the same machine.

what better not to have both installed on the one machine ?

ok reason i was asking anyway is because ive just done (yet another) install of xp and have had issues with .net framework so would rather just install 2 for latest ati drivers

Yea it would be better just to have one version on your machine.
However, they can both co-exist on the same machine with no problems.

The only reason people suggest not putting both onto the same machine is b/c .Net 2.0 gives you the option to convert 1.1 code to 2.0 code.
However, this rarely works since the who folder structure and functions are different.

Also, .Net does eat up some resources as well.
With both installed, it could really bog down your system (since they both have a slew of services that start up at start up).

i run 1.1 and 2.0 at the same time on all my machines without a hitch, in fact i had to for a while as some ATI drivers needed both (they didnt officially, but they wouldnt install without both)

what about net 3.0.make sure windows passes wga test.to answer your question
it makes no difference.some apps(not ati i think)require "latest version".
net 2.0 takes much longer to install on my rig
