According to Phoronix the Doom 3 source code will be released despite the occasional speculation.

Cool.

nice, i love doom 3. Still play it on occasion.

I wonder what version of the engine is going to drop? It had some pretty huge improvements come Quake 4, but I don't know if those changes made it back to id's hand.

I just read about this too. Very cool.
Speaking at Quakecon 2011, id's technical director John Carmack revealed that parent company Zenimax was supportive of the move. He also challenged other developers to release their own source code, arguing that it helps the community.

The below is also cool, but I wants it now !! lol
Id's engine Id Tech Five will also go open source, but not until it's no longer used for official projects. Carmack speculated that this could be as long as ten years away.

NO not COD for 10 years NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO not COD for 10 years NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how that is related to id tech going open source, but I see that and read:

No COD for 10 years YAAAAAAYYYY!!!!!!!!:rockout:

I read on Slashdot that he goes so far as to challenge other developers to release their source code. Nice move Carmack.

The fact that CoD is based off the Tech 3 engine.

The fact that CoD is based off the Tech 3 engine.

I know that, but since COD 2/3 it's not really Tech 3, it's just based off it to a large extent. Kind of like Half-Life was based on Quake 1 engine.

That was not really what I questioning though. COD being based off Tech 3 is irrelevant to his post because it was licensed when COD was created and also when the modified engine was built. Tech 3 became open source a lot later. Also Tech 4 has not been used for the franchise and neither will Tech 5* so I fail to see any sense in his post...

EDIT: Ok, I see that I should have said "I don't know how that is related to id tech 4 going open source" for clarity, but it should have been obvious because of the OP...

* I have always thought that id has been very bad when licensing in that regards, they are so open and collaborative that really there's many many companies and publishers that once they adquire 1 license, they no longer need id tech, because id gave them everything they needed and taught them how to make/improve game engines. Even Valve can be put in this bag IMO, even if that was a long time ago.

Trying not to sound stupid, but can you explain what the difference in the 2 will be ? Is this the same game with a different engine. I ran the other into the ground. Don't really care to do those levels again.

No I get what you're saying. I just thought his post was......kinda relevant and if you didn't know the Tech 3 engine was used then it wouldn't make sense.....But you knew that so......diregaurd my post lol

See there are two engines/games I am excited to see.

1. A game that uses the Tech 5 engine thats over saw by the OLD crew at iD. Not the freshman making RAGE. Now I am sure RAGE will be a wounderful game. But until I see John Romero in the credits Ill haz a sad. Also if they do a reboot of the orginal Quake I wanna see American Mcgee in the credits also.

2. Valve making a new Source engine. Not just an "expansion pack" like "Lost Coast" and Ep. Two. A real new engine.

Who says you need a source code to make a CoD game based on the latest engine? After all id Software is developing game engines to be sold to others. Those interested can still license the engine and get all the required tools to make a game.

You guys really think COD is based off tech 3 your sadly mistaken,They have been using the updates tech engines every time one is released,Being this Nov will mark the tech5 engine being used.Wow i can`t be-leave you guys think that IW can rewrite source code within a year .......Remember since MW2 they have had been saying ...Modded this and that to the engine.....

Well yeah, but they can still buy the engine for purpose of making a game. It's not like this hasn't been done before...

CoD uses a modified Tech 3 engine. Thats a fact. Don't believe me? Look at the credits on the back of the box in the fine print. Not Tech 4 and definitely not Tech 5.

good news.............

On top of that, I think id said that Tech 5 will not be available to studios outside of Bethesda/Zenimax.

To answer this: "but not until it's no longer used for official projects". They said they (id software) had 3 or more projects going on, including a Quake game (reboot), a Doom game and another new franchise (not Rage) iirc, with Rage that makes 4 games using the engine, if Rage succeedes you can count a sequel too, plus there's been rumors of another Wolfenstein game, maybe even a reboot too.

This is not counting games made by other Zenimax studios, which may or may not use the engine.

And after all those games and others are released and id releases Tech 6, THEN it will go open source. And all that has nothing to do with COD franchise, since they use their own engine which is heavily based on id Tech 3 and only suffered very minor updates for each of the expansion packs, I mean gaaa... gaaaaamm... ga.. ga.. I can't say it... g a m e s. Woah I did it.

Well, it's not the game per se, it's mostly just the engine (artwork, etc. not free) that will be released under an open source license so that all the little developer kiddies can see how Johnny makes awesome engines.

another new franchise (not Rage) iirc

Brink 2?

can't wait, alot of home devs would love to get their hands on the engine
