Dragon Quest XI finally brings the epic JRPG series to the PC platform using trusted and tested game mechanics. Graphics follow a cute-ish game style and are powered by Unreal Engine 4. Our performance review looks at this in detail, using 15 graphics cards. We also investigate CPU-core scaling and VRAM usage.

do they use those jrpg random battles when you go into a fight every three steps?

You see the monsters in the world and can choose to avoid them

It's a non-Capcom Japanese UE4 game, performance is where you'd expect....

I've had FPS drops sometimes, especially in the main street of Gondolia where it drops to 45-50 and it wont go back to 60, is this normal? I have an i5 4690k at 4 GHZ and a 1060 6GB with OC.

ithink also these test should included efficiency and showing how much gpus need power to run it.
these days is moust important thing.

its sure that amd's gpu should be last and even more clear than now.

all this result saying only 1 thing, amd 's gpus are very lausy., and if we seeing efficiency i called amd gpus junk.

if u use 24" monitor gtx 1060 6gb is enough and best buying gpu.

it's turn based
TY

Try turning your AA and AF settings down or off. Turn the AA off if you're at 1080p or better. Not really needed. Setting your AF to 4x or 8x will also help your performance.

I'll put it on my cheap shark list and wait for a sale. Like Wizard said in his review, $60 for the game is pricey. More so for a console portes game that's a year old.

Yes, 4 core CPU means you will run into bottlenecks from time to time and it is well known that 'hubs' with lots of NPCs are CPU heavy. It may also be a heavier load on the GPU, but a 1060 should be sufficient for good FPS @ 1080p.

Why? Its a performance metric not an efficiency contest. If you have a GPU then it really doesn't matter whether it uses 10-20W more or less, you just want to know how the game will run.

This isn't a GPU review... Not ten years ago and not 'these days' either. Efficiency only really matters when it directly impacts performance: such as throttling.

yeah yeah yeah Grandpa

you've got the most efficientest card ever, nothing comes close.

Hi from France !

I just registered to say that I love your CPU Scaling test, very very interesting. I hope you will keep this part for next game performance analysis.
This is great work, thank you !

He is a legendary troll from Finnish hardware sites, almost all his posts are like that.

So a Pentium with hyperthreading and a decent graphics card like GTX 970 and up will do just fine.

does the main character talk yet???

Just got f___ed up with its poor 1080Ti @ 4K performance.
I think I should either set the quality lower or buy a 2080Ti / Titan V for this.....

BTW
(1) Overclocking 1080Ti makes no many senses. From 1822MHz to 2012MHz it increases 3 FPS, but it's far not enough for a stable 4K 60FPS.
(2) In Heliodor's fountain you can get -10 FPS than OP's result - with my 1080Ti (running at 1822MHz) it's 43 FPS in average.
(3) Windows 7 has an additional graphic quality issue - always display a line like a paper being folded when moving character or playing event video, which Windows 10 doesn't have.

Specs
i7 6850K
ASRock X99M Killer 3.1
16GB DDR4 3200 RAM (Dual Channel)
Gigabyte AORUS GTX1080Ti
Micron 5100 PRO 240GB M.2 Enterprise SSD (Win7)
Samsung SM953 480GB NVMe M.2 Enterprise SSD (Win10)
Seasonic Prime 650 Titanium

This seems to be an active limit by the game program.
In Gondolia's main street, specific zone & specific angle, the game limits it to 30 fps on GTX1080Ti. GPU% also drops here.
If I rotate the angle, it rapidly recovers to 5x-60 fps & 100% GPU.

BTW on Heliodor's fountain,
- GTX1080Ti 4K - 43fps average, 60fps when leaving (capped)
- GTX1060 3GB 4K - 18fps average, 22fps when leaving
- GTX1060 3GB 2K - 31fps average, 44fps when leaving
- GTX1060 3GB 1080P - 34fps average, 60fps when leaving (capped)
I'll test GTX1080Ti 2K & 1080P later. If they're not 60fps, then this spot also has the game program's active performance limitation.

Personal update about DQXI & DQXI S FPSes:

Scene 1 (in the very beginning)
1.jpg
DQXI vanilla (Min FPS)
RTX3060Ti 48 FPS
GTX1080Ti 46 FPS (-9 from TPU's 55.1)
RTX2080 45 FPS (-18 from TPU's 63.4)
RTX3080 75 FPS

DQXI S
RTX3060Ti 81 FPS
RTX3080 137 FPS

Scene 2
2.jpg
DQXI vanilla
RTX3060Ti 53 FPS
GTX1080Ti 51 FPS (-4 from TPU's 55.1)
RTX2080 51 FPS (-12 from TPU's 63.4)
RTX3080 85 FPS

DQXI S
RTX3060Ti 76 FPS
RTX3080 TBD

If assuming RTX2080 is 100%, then

GTX1080Ti 101%
RTX3060Ti 104%
RTX3080 167%

Sorry for using another account & reply again.

I bought a 6900XT and retested the 4K benchmarks.

Scene 1
Vanilla - 70 FPS
S - 133 FPS

Scene 2
Vanilla - 77 FPS

Scene 3 (The mini medal school’s zoom point)
All Vanilla
3060Ti - 56 FPS
6900XT - 75 FPS
3080 - 78 FPS

Reference to RTX2080 - 153%

This time I use CPU 5800X and RAM 3600MHz 14-14-14-36.

Unfortunately, even it’s the fastest AMD GPU right now, all of them are inferior to 3080.
