Hi All!

I'm planning to upgrade my PC around november/december this year to a build with RTX 4080 (yes, I know it's a ripoff). I finally want a bulid, with which I can properly experience ray tracing, and that will last for the next 4-5 years without much compromise. I'm a casual gamer, I mostly like story-driven RPG-s, like Horizon Zero Dawn, RDR2, Mass Effest, Skyrim (with Wildlander modpack), Plague Tale, etc.

My current specs:

Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G9 - I'm keeping this.

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming
Cpu: Ryzen 5 3600
RAM: G.SKILL 16GB KIT DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Trident Z RGB
VGA: MSI RTX2070 SUPER - GAMING Z TRIO
SSD: ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 500GB
HDD: Seagate BarraCuda 3.5 2TB 7200rpm 256MB SATA3
PSU: Seasonic Focus Plus 650 Gold
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62
Case: Lian Li pc-o11-dynamic

I could sell this build now around 1100-1000 EUR.

In the last month, I've been doing a lot of research about my options. In my country in the EU, the price of an Intel i5 13600k System isn't lower than an AM5. As I almost exclusively use my PC for gaming, I don't see a reason to switch to Intel.

My dream build now would be this:

Motherboard:

Asus ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI - 280 EUR with pcie 5.0 m.2 and PCIe 5.0 x16, and nice audio codec. I don't see any reason to choose an X670 board, this has all the features that I need, and is also future proof, although I'm aware, that for graphics cards, PCIe 4.0 will be plenty for the forseeable future. On the lower end, the price difference between B650 boards and this one is ~65 EUR, so I'm willing to pay this extra.

CPU: Ryzen 7 7700x

Earlier I was thinking about a build with RTX 4070ti, but since I'm spending a lot of cash on a new PC, I said to myself, let's go all in for an RTX 4080 build. Unfortunately, this means, I had to upgrade the Ryzen 5 7600x to this one. Price difference is ~100 EUR.

RAM:

G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 - nothing special, as far as I know, 6000 MHz is the sweetspot. Maybe CL 30 would be better, I will do some research here.

VGA: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4080 16GB OC - they say, get the cheapest RTX 4080, and this is the cheapest. The features of the RTX 40 series (better ray tracing, dlss 3.0, frame generation) is much more appealing to me, than the similarily priced RX 7900 XTX.

SSD: haven't decided yet on exact model, I will probably get a fast 2TB M.2 ssd.

PSU: MPG A850G PCIE5 - excellent ATX 3.0 Psu with 16 pin (12+4) 12VHPWR cable for ~160 EUR, or should I get the 1000 W variant for ~225 EUR?

Alternatively: FSP Hydro G PRO 1000W for 170 EUR

CPU Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE for ~42 EUR

Alternatively: deepcool LT520 for ~120 EUR

Case: Lian Li LANCOOL II Mesh - if I can get my hands on one.

If I sell my old rig, I would be able to build this new one now, with extra ~1350 EUR, and I expect the component prices to drop somewhat till december.

Another option would be to build an AM4 system with Ryzen 7 5800X3D and DDR4.

My question is, is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D enough for the RTX 4080?

The price difference between the 5800X3D and 7700x is 10EUR, so basically nothing.

DDR4 RAM kit is ~80-100 EUR cheaper than DDR5.

A good B550 motherboard is ~150 EUR cheaper than the B650E.

What do you guys think? I would love some feedback!

Thank you!

If you're building a new system AM4 is really not worth it even if it's obviously cheaper, go for the newer platform.

If its your dream build, go with the latest and greatest of what you can afford.

You will not properly experience ray-tracing in 3-4 years time. Nvidia are pushing it hard and if you look at the generational leaps in RT from NV, the 4080 will probably age badly on that front. I'd save on other fronts and get a 4090 if you really want to maximise longevity. To be honest though, you buy the best you can now, to play the best there is now. Spending a tonne for future proofing is a no-win situation, unless you dial down the effects in games as your system ages.

So the resolution of your screen is 5120x1440, pretty much 4K, CPU matter very little at 4K Ultra anyways (even with rtx6090 in the future) so might as well go with 5800X3D + cheap B550 board + 2x16GB 3600MT DDR4 and save the cash for rtx4090

Once RT is enabled, it's pretty much always GPU bound @ 4K

No way you'd get 1k € for your current system. Just looked at some local listings and people are selling similar or better for 650-750€.

Everything will age badly, forever. RT performance basically only scales with number of compute units, meaning the delta between raster and RT will remain roughly the same going into the future.

Look at this, Turing -56% performance hit and Ada -48%, the performance hit is effectively the same percentage wise, it's hardly anything you can call a "generational leap". Newer cards are better at RT because they have more compute units and higher clocks and not because RT performance itself is improving in any substantial manner.

May be I skimmed too fast, but didn't see which EU country the OP is referring to.

+1 to what the mods and others suggested.

I'd say make your budget first..like for real. How much do you want to spend in total.....and then continue. Otherwise you just have money to burn. Personally I always skimp on the case to a brutal extent :) I mean I love it when people say "budget build" and the case is Lian li....those two don't really go together in my head.

Always prioritize gpu horsepower first and then fill out the rest of the build..... Personally I'd sell your psu/gpu/cpu pick up a 5800X3D and a 4080/4090 with a high quality 850w/1000w pcie 5.0 psu.

There is no such thing as future proof though the 4090 will likely struggle in RT games 3 years from now But it will still give you a much better experience over those 3 years vs the 4080.

Thank you all fot

I'm from Hungary, I've checked similar used builds here, 1000 EUR is not unrealistic.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

Hi,

If you're building a PC in 9-10 months from now, don't do any planning until a month or two beforehand.

A lot can happen in 9-10 months, both in terms of pricing/availability, and also in terms of what's the best thing at any given point in time.

I mean, if I had to guess about what's likely to be optimal in 9 months from now, I'd say one of the AM5 X3D CPUs is the best for gaming. It's going to be neck-and-neck with the 13900KS in games but cheaper and something you can probably run comfortably at 150W rather than the 250-350W an Intel needs to match it.

As for graphics cards, the drivers for the 7900XTX are improving at a decent pace, and the pricing of the 4080 and below are likely to change dramatically because they're simply not selling at the current asking price, and this stalemate cannot last forever.
