I noticed a new version of this utility on AMD's site, one dated 8/07, i have a an older one from 11/06, so i'm wondering if i actually need it. I downloaded and installed a new version of the CPU driver and a new Power Monitor, but not sure about the Optimizer. Another thing that puzzles me is the fact that the new Optimizer is only listed for Athlon X2 CPUs, i have an FX and the FX page only features the old 11/06 version. May be this means that Fx owners don't need it?

FX = use the 11/06 optimizer
X2's = use the new optimizer
Opterons = do NOT use the optimizer

Based on my 8/07 download readme file:

---Improvement and Fixes---
Version 1.1.3
* Updated AMD Dual-Core Optimizer for compatibility with AMD Family 0x10 and AMD Family 0x11 processors.

Version 1.1.2
* AMD Dual-Core Optimizer installation no longer requires system reboot. (Clean installs only, upgrades from 1.1.1 still requires reboot.)

Version 1.1.1
* AMD Dual-Core Optimizer’s driver has been WHQL tested and signed by Microsoft Corporation.

Version 1.1.0
* 4x4 “Gaming Mode” added.

Version 1.0.0
* This is the initial release.

If you don't have a 0x10 or 0x11 family processor, then don't bother downloading it...

Side question, not to go offtopic, but does anyone know if the dual-core optimizer work for Vista 64-bit? The readme only lists Vista Beta 2.. I installed it on my Vista Business 64-bit, but it doesn't seem to start and noticed no difference.

never used the optimizer, does it really help?

I noticed no difference when I used it.

It helps a lot with some games like Archlord. Without the dual-core optimizer, the game won't work at all. Other than that, I haven't noticed major improvements in XP.

I've noticed it makes multitasking much smoother.

Don't know if it actually helps or not but i installed it in the first week after assembling this system and haven't had any issues with games, thats what it supposed to help with as robodude666 pointed out.
