DVI KVM switch with VGA source. How do I get it to work?

So I have a DVI KVM switch (Avocent SC4UAD-001) I finally decided to hook up. My main computer, which I use DVI with works fine.

Today I found out that you cannot use one of those adapters that come with video cards to use a VGA source on a DVI monitor.

The Interwebz suggested I use the VGA source on the VGA port of my monitor (Dell U2312HM), but.....that kind of defeats the whole purpose of me getting a KVM switch!

TL;dr: Want to use VGA computer on DVI KVM switch. What adapter/cable do I need?

From the description this adapter should do the trick, but I want to be sure before I go out and buy adpaters and cables only to find out it won't work!

Alright well I realized there's another hurdle. Turns out my monitor is only DVI-D, not DVI-I as I thought.

So could I use one of those active DP to DVI adpaters?

I tried to make a MS Paint diagram as best as I could

Why not just use a DVI-D cable from the KVM to the monitor? Newegg says U2312HM has a DVI in.

The monitor has DVI-D (digital only). I need the monitor to have DVI-I (digital and analog). From my research so far the DVI to DisplayPort adapter would work, but it's cheaper to just get a VGA based KVM.
