DVI Vs VGA

Ive only just realised that my TFT monitor has a DVI input At the moment Im using a 'VGA to VGA' cable with a DVI attachement so the cable can plug into the DVI port on my X1800XT. Would I benefit from getting a 'DVI to DVI' cable so I can use the DVI ports on my X1800XT and TFT monitor

I think it's probably worth it to go to DVI.

If your video card generates a frame for your monitor it knows exactly what color it's putting in each pixel, then if you're using a VGA cable it converts it into an analog signal meant to be received by a CRT, and your LCD has to convert this back into the color data for each pixel it's displaying. All the conversion can introduce a loss of data, plus analog signals on cables are more easily interfered with. I've seen some monitors with 20' or so VGA cables that have really bad ghosting.

The DVI cable's signal is digital so it still requires some packaging / unpackaging at either end but there shouldn't be as much chance for data loss.

At the same time it's probably not going to be a noticeable difference. Also I believe single link DVI is limited to 1600x1200 at 60Hz or 1920 x 1080 at 30Hz so if you're going over this I would stick to VGA.
