Have a Intel 1150 board running a 4690K chip and looking for an excellent fairly low profile air cooler for it.

Not really sure what would be a good choice.

I'd put a tall cooler on the system but it's in a pretty small ITX cube case.

I've probably got about 3 or 4 inches above the chip so I don't really need one of the real low profile coolers.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Stock cooler is pretty alright if that is short enough.

Oh, I have more room than a stock cooler. I'd prefer something way better than stock.

I used an Akasa Nero LX with an old Xeon X3470, and it stayed reasonably cool under load. I think it peaked in the low-to-mid-60s under load

Dunno how easy it will be to get. I got mine on eBay and while it was cheap, it took forever to ship.

Here's an old picture showing it installed on the Xeon in my Zotac ITX board.

I purchased one of these for a 4770 build a while ago:

But I dont see it for sale anymore. It was a fantastic cooler. Did a great job in cooling and it was cheap. Also queit.

So other option can be something like this:

Wow @sam_86314 they are tough to find. Seems that Performance PC is the only US based business that carries it.

I was actually looking at the Scythe Big Shuriken 3 cooler @biffzinker

Good reviews and would probably work good for this application.

Don't really need that low of a profile but it would be a hell of a lot better than a stock cooler!!!

Can't even play a game with the stock cooler without it hitting close to the 100C mark. :(

Haven't seen one of these in a long time.

No kidding!!!!! Didn't even know they were still in production with them. Maybe just left over from the day? LOL

I'll toss in my cent and say the EVGA ITX one. It's in my ITX case and fits pretty well with a 4690k at 4.2ghz at around 55c.

3-4 inches of clearance isn't enough to fit a 92mm tower like the NH-U9S or the EVGA cooler.

There are a couple. If you can go up to 65mm while staying strictly within the confines of the socket, the NH-L9x65 is probably the best for that. But Haswell runs real hot, so it may not handle the chip at stock if running all-out CPU stress tests (gaming might be ok). I had to downclock my 4790K so it could run stress tests at below 95C. But as the 4690K also doesn't have HT and has lower stock speeds, you may be fine. Any smaller than a L9x65 and you might be playing with fire depending on airflow and ambient.

Going beyond the socket and a bit taller, theres the NH-L12S, NH-L12 Ghost S1 edition, Black Ridge, and Big Shuriken. There's a couple more Black Ridge-esque imitators out there, you'll probably see them mentioned on SFFnetwork. With adequate airflow and no other limiting factors such as the PSU being millimeters overhead in the SG05/SG13, these downdraft coolers (particularly the L12S) should be approaching 92mm tower performance a la NH-D9L and NH-U9S, which are much taller at 115-125mm tall.

Which case is it? Product model name/number?

Just looked it up and found I have the Corsair Obsidian 250D case.

It's this one:

I'll have to measure to see just what my clearance is for a CPU cooler.

@stinger608 Actually, the 250D fits plenty of coolers. The "official" spec is 95mm, but that's if you use an optical drive. If you don't, you have 135mm-140mm to go before touching the top panel. 92mm towers that are 110-125mm tall like the D9L, U9B SE2 and U9S fit just fine. It then goes without saying that the aforementioned downdraft coolers like the L12S, Pallas, Big Shuriken, Black Ridge, etc. will fit with plenty of space to spare, but they aren't exactly competitive with the likes of the U9S in a roomy case like the 250D. They're more attractive for SFF cases where you can't fit a conventional cooler.

Given 140mm to work with, the best cooler would probably be the C14S, but it's large, heavy, a compatibility headache, and you'd probably need to run the fan below the heatsink, in which case it'd perform no better than a U9S.

Like my Cerberus, however, it won't be enough to fit 120mm tower coolers like the 212 but for a stock 4690K, 92mm towers should be plenty. You get a straight airflow path from the large front fan to the rear exhaust panel. Since the mobo is horizontal in that case, it's probably a good idea to cut down on CPU cooler weight anyways in the interest of extending the life of the board.

Thanks for some suggestions brother!!!!:respect::respect::respect:

I settled for the Noctua NH-D9L due to being dual fan compatible. I'll most likely install it with the dual fans right from the get go. :p

Did you buy it already? If not, the U9S is worth a look if it's not too expensive. I have both, the single fan U9S performs on par/outperforms a dual fan D9L as it's got an extra heatpipe and taller. Which is a good thing as a dual-fan D9L is where you can possibly start running into some issues with RAM or other components clearance.

Both are stout and punch well above their figurative weight on Intel. You can also see how much undervolting your 4690K can take. Less heat is always better for these small cases.

Yeah, I actually grabbed the D9L before your last post @tabascosauz
Looking at the specs and measuring the board for clearance it should fit just fine with plenty of memory clearance.

You have a shitton of clearance, ~140mm from board to the top. That's enough to stick a decent140W tower cooler in it, plus you have mounts for 240mm AIO.
Even of those universal $20 tower HSFs from china w/ 92mm fans will give you enough thermal headroom even with some overclocking.
I have one of those AVC90 heatsinks (6 heatpipes, up to 3 92mm fans) in my Z620 ghetto-workstation, and it keeps E5-2660 below 60C even at full load (with generic dual-fan config it cost me less than $18 new). And I still haven't put any fans in the case yet, so that's a good result with completely stagnant airflow.
If money is no objective, or you care about warranty, I suggest you go for Noctua NH-D9L or one of the U9 variants. Those normally have 110mm clearance and excellent performance.
P.S. Don't pay attention to 95mm clearance in spec, you have a lot more room to work with.

I suggest you go for Noctua NH-D9L

Yeppers, that is exactly what I purchased. I really, really didn't want to spend, close to $60 for a cooler, but damn!!!!! That is a sweet cooler and figured it would do just what is needed.

Keep the chip cool!

I actually have a POS all in one cooler in the case now and it runs in the high 60c to low 70c at frigging idle! Terrible cooling. I think it has a serious issue.

Haven't seen any sign of a leak but it has gotten worse and worse over the last 2 or 3 months. Maybe the pump is giving up or something. Something is a miss.

Received the cooler today via Prime. Thanks Amazon for Sunday deliveries!!!:clap::clap:

Got it installed and what an amazing difference!!!

hasn't got over 32c at idle. Man, that is pretty much a 30+c temp drop from the AIO cooler!

When I pulled the AIO cooler the copper base of the heat sink is seriously discolored. Have to think that there is something seriously wrong with that thing.

It's either condensation if it was hanging out in storage or may of started to leak around the o-ring?

That's an awfully big drop in temperature moving from a semi working AIO.

Where's the photos? I'll even settle for just one.

:) Take a picture for us!

Perhaps the AIO had a lot of corrosion jamming it up inside and/or the pump died. That's why I would never put an AIO in anything that I won't touch for the next five years.

My D9L held my 4790K at bay without any maintenance/cleaning, in dusty and warm environments on both sides of the globe, for five years before I put it back in the box. Hopefully yours is even better. I keep on forgetting how much lower the 4690K is clocked, should be great.
