so i bought GOTY fallout3 on the steam sale and went to fire it up today. first i continuously get "windows live has an update you need to restart after the update" every time i try to log in to windows live. so i said screw windows live and just went to play the game. click new game, do the name the sex the facial look, and get to the "one year later" part walk to the dad and WHAM stops responding, same part every time no matter what.

os: fresh win 64 install (2 days old)
cpu: i3-550:4.2ghz
ram: mushkin redline 6-8-6-24-1T at 1600mhz
gpu: GTX280 stock clocks 602/1104/1298
psu: corsair 950tx

all water cooled.

I have no idea wtf is causing it any help would be awesome

I found this game very temperemental. Sometimes would run fine, other times do what you said. I had to lower my graphics settings, still ran at 1680x1050 but dropped detail all to medium to get it more stable. I know your system is great, but mine isn't bad either but still needed medium settings.

It seems to have memory leaks as well and this means it can run for a bit and then crash.

Your other thing to check is that your default sound settings are to use windows media default settings for sound codec players, not any other codec player. This can also cause an unresponsive game. Just google "fallout 3 sound problem" and see how many threads there are.

Hope this provides a starting point. Your next game crash section may occur once you leave the vault, this happened to me and many others as well.

Yeah I hate this game, it ain't against the game itself, (which for the 20 mins a played into it, was great) It just wouldn't stop crashing. I've done everything, updating it, the codec stuff, as soon as I left the vault, it started happening. It would crash after 5 mins or so I played. I've visited that small town outside like a 100 times, doing the same things. I finally grew tired and just sold the game @ nearly the same price I bought it. :banghead:

Games for Windows Live causing the issue? Download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/live/pages/livejoin.aspx

Install it, run it, let it update itself, then run the game.

Fallout 3 does like to go unresponsive and the only thing I know of that increases the frequency of it is a burdened CPU (like BOINC, WCG, or F@H running). Even if you stop those processes, sometimes it will occassionally lock up but it is pretty rare. My advice: quicksave (F5) often and turn auto-save on.

I would PM Black Panther on this. She knows her Fallout 3. Anyway Ill tell you what I know.

1. Fallout 3 is known to have a REALLY bad memory leak on 64-bit systems. They fixed it with some of the newer updates but it still happens to a few people. Make sure you are updated.

2. The game is VERY sensitive to OC procressors. It will bomb your system faster then OCCT will! So trying running your system at stock and see if you do any better. I know it sounds like a pain in the ass but its worth a try.

3. When you do get the game going check out this handy site.

If you get stuck it will help ;)

still stops responding even at stock clocks!! arghhhh!!!! i can play for about 15 min's then it just stops out of nowheere!

i had the same issues, played on low res and window mode crash less.

The game is not tuned right for 64bit Win7 so their patches do not solve these failures.

Im sorry for you mate, I hope that does not do the same shitty things with the upcoming las vegas.

If codecs were not the issue, try other graphics drivers.

It's been some time now since I played the game, but I do remember one driver with which the game continually crashed - I was using the 8800GT then so it was a nvidia one. I had to reinstall an older driver. What's confusing is that this driver had worked fine for others, so it meant that the driver together with some software or hardware configuration specific to my pc was conflicting with the game.

When I much later installed an even newer driver later on the game worked fine. So yup it's finicky to graphics drivers, and it could be your case.
