Which are the best for finding lost files? I have at least tried around 50 different. And many can find files that others do not find. It seems to be very different between them all.

Well, the best file recovery is having proper backups in place should a data loss occur.

I have used a few over the years with varying success. I would not necessarily call one the "best".

Most good ones function basically the same.

I've had pretty good luck with recuva for simple undeletion. PhotoRec and DiskDrill work well too.

I really like RIP linux (as i am a fan of slackware) or Knoppix but pretty much any live disc of linux will do. ddrescue is what i have had the best luck with.

https://forensics.wiki/ has a wealth of info on the subject.

https://www.gillware.com/ I've used these guys when the clients data was valuable enough to merit proper data recovery. Cheaper than losing your business, for sure.
