News.com is reporting on the student-assembled astronomical research balloon that crashed into the Pacific Ocean, with all data being saved due to the hardy memory cards that survived the plunge.

The two inexpensive store-bought SanDisk CompactFlash memory cards survived the crash and soaking in the ocean, bring about intriguing possibilities for other uses of the storage devices, which are small and lightweight with very few moving parts.
