Hi all

I have set up a new FTP server, and I need to ba able to access it via the internet from interstate.

Filezilla ALWAYS returns this.

Status: Resolving address of solveengineering.dyndns.org
Status: Connecting to 124.179.226.144:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

Can you guys please help me find out if its server side, or my settings are wrong? Please some help would be great....

I assume you have forwarded port 21 through the router/firewall?

Have you tried it locally using the private IP address of the server?

Are you testing this from inside the same network as the server?(I ask because some ISPs do not allow you to access the public IP from that IP, Comcast is known for this.)

i can get to the files from inside the LAN, but not from outside the LAN, and this is the most important.
We are using a wireless USB modem, and I am unsure how to forward ports using this.

Can you get to the files?

100% correct! If the port 21 where the FTP server is not configured to be forwarded, it won't work. You can change around the port if you wish, but 21 is the default.

Find the model number of the router and google "Port Forwarding <model_number>" there are usually instructions available.

Otherwise tell us the model of the router and we should be able to help you.

But that means that I can change it to whatever I want, but I still cant forward it?

Its a Bigpond wireless USB modem. Its not a router at all.

I can get to a computer on LAN via 'run', but I cant to it via My network Places? whats with that?

It says I dont have permisions, why can I get to it via the 'run' (\\192.168.0.1) command then?

If the computers IP is 192.168.0.1 and you have more than one computer using the same internet connect, you have a router.

I have the connection shared in ICS. The computer with the modem plugged into it is .0.1, I am currently, right now on .0.7

Im still pretty sure that I cant forward anything on this modem. Would I have to forward the ports on this machine, and on the internet serving machine? The internet serving machine is a laptop with a USB wireless modem. The machine that I am on right now is the file server.

So what IP does the laptops wireless connection have? If it is the 124.179.226.144 IP, then you don't need to forward anything through the modem.

However, you are still going to have to forward the port from the laptop to the file server, essentially by using ICS you are turning your laptop into a router.

Here is a guide on forwarding ports through ICS.

if you dont have a router then you dont need to forward ports since there is nothing blocking you except possibly your isp. turn off windows firewall and any lame anti-virus software you have if it still is a problem.
