Hey,

just got an old computer off a friend i plan to use for ftp/mail/webhosting... nothing special, P3 933mhz, 192mb of ram.

What would be the best software to do this with? And what would be the best OS?

Cheers,

~IR

I like filezilla for FTP, you can assign user and directorys easily. One of these day I will ge my FTP back online.

install ubuntu server and webmin and its really easy to do whatever you want from there.

Ok, thanks guys. I assume all these are for xp? is there a way of doing it from a linux OS, or is it not worth bothering with?

I believe filezilla is multi-platform.

OS could be Linux/Unix (FreeBSD ftw!), vsftpd might be good choice for ftp server, and http server could be Apache/thttpd/lighttpd.

linux
ftp: proftpd
httpd: apache
mail: exim, if you need more sophisticated use qmail
