I have a Freesync compatible monitor, and I have read that it is possible to get G-sync working on it (allegedly).

However, there is no option in nVIDIA control panel for G-sync.

Is that normal?

It's under G-Sync Compatible (not "FreeSync"). Have to have updated drivers to see it.

nVidia doesn't support gsync nor freesync over hdmi. AMD supports freesync over HDMI. nVidia requires display port in order to make gsync/freesync work.

Should work without a problem via DP:

Be sure to turn FreeSync on in panel menu settings, then it should show up in Nvidia controls.

No G-sync option in Control Panel.

I am using Display Port.

Three things you need to make sure gsync over freesync will work:
1. Connect display via display port
2. Enable freesync in display's osd menu
3. Update your gpu driver to latest available version, preferably with "clean install" option available in driver installer or use DDU (display driver uninstaller) to do that.

Freesync is on.

Run DDU and install newest driver

Also, it would be worth to check out the updated display driver:
Just in case.

EDIT.
Oh wait, you're running W7 aren't you? That's a no go then, Nvidia locked it to W10.
GPU:
GeForce 10 series (Pascal) and above including the latest GeForce RTX 20-Series graphics cards.
Driver:
R417.71 or higher
Operating System:
Windows 10 x64

Is it on the list of compatible monitors? 94% failed to be certified....theres a big thread here discussing it...

He's on W7, it only works on W10. Case closed.

Right. I got that...and it is also something easily mitigated. I didnt feel the need to address every point in the thread in my reply.

The monitor also needs to be on that compatibility list for best results.

It should work without a problem, techspot tested this exact monitor with 2080 Ti and they had no problems. User compatibility lists also reports no errors. He only needs to upgrade to W10 in order for it to work.

One of Nvidia’s requirements for G-Sync Compatible certification is to have FreeSync enabled by default, so we suspect that's one reason these LG monitors don't immediately pass certification.

Cool. So like I said...it needs to be on the list (as well).

Thanks for spelling it out??? What do you keep nitpicking about?

W10 only?

Huh, I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it said 7, 8, 8.1 and 10.

Pretty crappy move nVIDIA.

No W10 for me until I figure out how to effectively neuter it.

Thanks to all who tried to assist.

That was your first mistake lol, Wikipedia isn't all that reliable

OK, Wikipedia is not that reliable, but...

it was the one source that mentioned what Windows versions G-sync worked with. I looked at several dozen webpages about G-sync, and nothing I found mentioned it being exclusive to W10, so...

It works on these windows versions if you have a G-Sync monitor.

You have a Free-Sync monitor which is only G-Sync compatible on windows 10.

The nvidia site mentions the requirements. Always go straight to the horses mouth.

W7+ is fine if it wasn't for the gsync freesync thing above.

I incorrectly presumed that if G-sync works on W7, then it would work on a Freesync monitor. Now I know.

Thanks to you and P4-630.

Windows 7 support ends in 6 months (January 2020).
I don't think it's a crappy move by NVIDIA. There is no good reason for them to waste time and money to support an EOL OS.

You can still upgrade for free using the Microsoft upgrade tool if you have a legit Windows 7 licence.
You can disable most of Windows 10 built-in ads and spying using O&O ShutUp10.
You can disable automatic updates by setting your internet connection as metered.

PS: If you have a smart phone (Android or iOS), you're already being spied.
If you have a social media account (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, etc) then you are being spied.
If you do web searches (Google, Bing, etc), you are being spied.
If you use Google Chrome with a signed in account, you are being spied.

I know this post is not related in any way to the thread and I'm sorry for derailing it but this "Windows 7 is pure and Windows 10 is evil" mentality is getting old (considering it's the second time I see this happening too, the first time being when Windows XP was near EOL and people were bashing Windows 7 and 8).

Again sorry for the derail.

Really no point commenting further, starting to go off track, mods can close thread.

That's for G-SYNC, not "G-SYNC Compatible." G-SYNC is mostly hardware. "G-SYNC Compatible" is mostly software. They didn't backport the G-SYNC Compatible code to older versions of Windows.

Update to Windows 10, problem solved.

A monitor does not have to be on the list to work. Those failed monitors all work with G-Sync, meaning at the least the option will show up to enable it.

All freesync monitors will work, but a very small % of them pass nvidia's tests to work with little to 0 issues. Worth noting that most monitors that failed were due to they don't support a VRR range in their test. You can enable it even if it was a one that failed but there is no guarantee it will work 100%.
