hi all, having a problem with my dads gaming computer i built for him a few years ago, i had hes comp overclock almost since he got it running good, as of late he ask me to put everything at factory settings so i did, then we baught gta 4, it was running to so for him so he ask me to bump the system back up, doing so i did, but what do u know a get the famous bsod, he system never used to do this before i know hes computer inside and out, my usual settings are fsb258x12 vcore 1.578v offset 100mv httx4 ram divider /6 pc6400 5.5.5.15 2T 1032mhz 2.35v, when hes system was fine i ran prime for 6 hours fully stable no errors, now i cant even go past 210fsb, is hes cpu dieing

Going to need a little more information about his system specs mate.

*edit- Is he running vista or xp?

Are you running vista or xp?

And do you have the pc26400 RAM actually running at 1000MHz +?

oh yeah this ram clocks like mad, i can hit tops 1066mhz or even higher lol

running win xp home sp3, did a full format fresh install just recently, temps and voltages are good, weird hes system used to hold a overclock now i cant even get past 210fsb, only thing i can think of is to clear c-mos

Man I have had those OCZ pc26400 kits and pumping over 2.2v into them is not recommended. I would lower the RAM clocks, and lower the voltage. Then test for stability with the processor overclocked. If it is still unstable you may have problem with CPU or RAM. My opinion is that it's your RAM though. Pumping that voltage into it without any special cooling could be damaging.

*edit- Oh and by the way, GTA IV is a very demanding game. If you wanted to see a large improvement in gameplay you may wanna add another 2 gigs of RAM. Also, an 8800 GT is an old card.. I dunno if it can handle GTA IV on it's own..

ever heard of pc6400 clocking that high lol, but your right i should bump the ram down, i felt both dimms seems to be cool, ran 1 pass of memtest x86 with no errors and ran prime95 for 6 hours on cpu no errors go figure

gta 4 ran not to bad, 1440x900 almost all high settings, getting a consistent 30 to 45 fps

Yeah I figured it would be your RAM :toast:. Just start from a lower clock and work up again. I would suggest staying at or below 2.2v though.. especially if you want your RAM to last for awhile.

i dont think its the ram i even lowered the divider to pc400, htt1x 258x12, still no go bsod

ill try clearing cmos and see if that helps thanks man for the help

Well your ram could be dead... did you try lowering your CPU clock and testing for stability? When does your BSOD appear? During boot/strap or once you are into OS?

*edit- no problem man keep me updated.. I'll try to use whatever knowledge I have to help ya out.

i lowered all settings to stock, still wouldn't boot into windows, so i had to set all ram setting to auto to get into windows, yeah even 210fsb to 258fsb, its gets to the windows xp loading logo, then crashes with a blue screen

To me.. it sounds like your RAM, and I say this because you said you were monitoring your overclocked temps. Which discount your CPU dying. Unless you have had it for quite some time. I would try to boot up with another stick of RAM. See if you can load up windows without a bsod.

i can get into windows just fine with all settings at stock, but when i go to overclock then i get a bsod but never did this before, my gf has my other comp so i don't have any dd2 ram, ill try that and clearing cmos

So you can't even overclock it in the slightest amount?

nope 210 is my limit, no matter what cpu voltage or ram divider, or any setting of that matter

you say this comp is two years old?

When was it cleaned last, and have you even monitoerd temps, or set the Pc power mangement to not restart on error so you can see the code that will lead you to the reason it is crashing?

Yeah something is obviously wrong with your RAM or CPU or MOBO for that matter. Like I said before, my money is on the RAM. I would suggest trying some other sticks in there and seeing if you can boot up with overclocked settings. You could also try re-seating your RAM.. doubt that would cure anything but might as well.

did a full format and install of winxp i week ago sneekypeet, temps are ok, cpu never hits past 63c with prime95

i am pretty sure Cja123 is leading in the right directions runnings thos sticks at 2.35v for months on end, is probably killing the ram, btw what if i run memtest with a mild overclock 209fsb seems how i cant go any higher man this is bugging me to no end, hes ready jump to a new cpu if this keeps up

you say you can get to windows...go to the power option in the control panel and do as I said earlier. Then get us the crash code( 0X000....) and Ill help and see what is causing it. Goolge is your friend with that number you will get!

sorry for the typo errors, if i run memtest would it pick up errors, if the ram is bad? if so how many passes should i run

right on thanks sneekpeek, hes using the comp as we speak, so ill updated ya tommorow for that error code. would clearing c-mos help
