Gigabyte 3060 ti VBIOS Issue

GPU Bricker

Windows 11 crashed on me out of nowhere and messed up my new card, just started booting to a black screen with a blinking underscore in top left corner. So I installed ubuntu which I have been using for years, Windows 11 looked really nice and finally got me back from Linux. After installing the nvidia drivers on linux, something got messed up and I was left with only a 1300 x 768 resolution option, nvidia-smi showing no device detected.

After days of trying to fix it I eventually came across this site and the nvflash tool, I downloaded the exact bios for my card and flashed it but it completely bricked the card, screen just white lines everywhere, really fuzzy graphics in the parts you can see. Somehow managed to reflash another bios, which shouldnt have been the correct one but it made it usable again. So im stuck with the open source linux drivers and incapable of installing windows because it doesnt detect the card and says the system isnt capable of running windows.

I have no onboard graphics (ryzen 5900) so its very risky for me to try anything and the vbios bricking incident has terrified me. Am I stuck with a 600 quid(probably only worth half that but its 2020s) card that I cant even install windows with?

The bios in question is here

Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB BIOS (GAMING OC PRO Rev. 3.0)

The device ID and serial were a perfect match as well

Is it possible that the wrong bios file has been uploaded for this model? Or is there another reason why this would brick?

I considered trying to blag my way into returning it as faulty, but mechanically there is nothing wrong with the card. I also wasnt aware that it was a restricted hash version, I would have went with the 6700xt or 3070 if I knew that, im not a miner or a gamer but at the price these things cost they shouldnt be restricted in any way.

It depends on Part number and memory, you will need to pull heatsink and get a pic of ram chips.

Lets start with your complete system specs so we can see what we are dealing with

why would you flash a bios in that scenario?
the bios is read once while posting and then never touched again. probably the card died or has major hardware issues.

Seems to be a rash of them and these are newer cards.

I should add this unverified Revision 2 bios is what saved the day for me and is allowing me to use ubuntu open source drivers. I suspect though if I tried to install the nvidia drivers it would go back only 1 resolution and no device detected.

Full specs

motherboard: ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII HERO (WI-FI)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5900x
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 3060 ti (Allegedly Rev 3)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX (2 x 16gb) (DDR4) (3600mhz)
SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 1TB
PSU: Straight Power 11 - Be Quiet 750W GOLD

Post a gpu z screenshot or is it the bios link you have from post 1?

Its my first build, first ever graphics card, and i spent 2 days trying to get it working, seemed like a decent shout at the time as I had just about given up lol

gpu-z is not available on linux but here are some details

Latest bios https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/242074/242074

You think I should give the latest one a try?

Bear in mind, one of the links you posted is the same link from the first post, its the one that effectively bricked it.

Before you flash, the bios that you linked to is in your very first post, is installed correct?

I wouldn't risk it unless if you have a spare gpu or another system to put the card in for disaster recovery methods

No, the bios in the first post is the one that bricked it, its supposed to be the correct one based on model info, but obviously its not.

The bios I have installed right now is this. It says its a revision 2 while my card is claiming to be revision 3.

Most come here already bricked their cards, get in a panic and really get impatient and don't read and understand commands given or really pay attention to videos.

Did you buy the card new or used?

Im going to bite the bullet and try the latest unverified, I have a backup of the usable one so barring a monumental bricking, hopefully I should at least be able to get back to this half working version.

This is on your conscience eidairaman.

10DE 2489 1458 405A

Is installed, the bios i just listed are

10DE 2489 1458 405E, so no not flash to those I just posted

I have one last question what is "-6" all about in the nvlfash command line arguments

new from Overlockers, so should be legit

What website is that, do you have a link?

What does the sticker on the card say, not the box?

Ok So Bios 10DE 2489 1458 405A

Works correctly in Linux/Windows or no?

Man I would be shitting bricks.

I have never flashed a GPU, that is some scary stuff!

I even get edgy flashing my motherboard bios lol..

Good luck man! :salute:

the BIOS i have installed right now is not what I would describe as working, the card is not being properly detected on linux and not being detected at all by windows installer

its working in teh sense that I can use linux right now but if I was to try and install the correct drivers from nvidia it would wreck the display and leave me with one small resolution

Odd, if the card wasnt working I would have sent it right back to them.

everything was working as expected until windows 11 crashed on me about 10 days in, I was left with an unbootable windows black screen, then on linux attempting to install the nvidia drivers for Resolve messed everything up

It's possible the card had a hardware failure.

Make sure you have a spare gpu or another system as a backup before flashing anything, nothing is 100% successful.

Anyways try the latest 405A bios from here.

Look at the dates.

Otherwise try the Latest 405E bios.

I'm not responsible for any bricks.

seems the difference between those is the boost clock 1740 vs 1770

the card is supposed to be 1770, hence I expected the 405E to work

if teh card was a 1770, there is no reason why the lower clock wouldnt function, I dont think the fact that the 405A is working proves that the card is not 1770

i have a good feeling about the latest 5E

I dont have a backup card, I have a decade old laptop that takes 30 seconds to load a modern web page.

But im a gambler, and im going for it. Will report back either from the PC or the old laptop.
