I got a free Athlon X2 6400+ from a friend a few months back but still have my stock HSF that came with my computer for the Athlon 4000+ single core. I'm looking to get a new heatsink and fan for Christmas. Any thoughts?

Get a 92mm Core Contact Sunbeam from Xoxide.com $15 bucks

They all seem a little large. Maybe something smaller? I don't how much room I'll have when I get my new case.

The cases you are considering are built to handle these coolers. I'm assuming this is tied to the case thread you've got going.

Yeah. I think I'm looking at the Cooler Master Storm Scout.

I was going to have to wait until Christmas... until I realized how hot my CPU was running. So I need new cooling for my CPU badly. However, my motherboard sucks and only has a 3-pin connector for the fan so I need a new motherboard to support any decent HSF ( I needed a new motherboard anyway). So I have to get a new motherboard and HSF, I figure I'll just get the case along with them. I'll order them now with my own money then just ask for the amount I'm going to spend on them for Christmas. That way I can get them now but technically still have them be paid for by my parents.

Well I have the stock HSF for the X2 and it's a 4-pin but the speed control wire is one of the middle ones and not one of the outside ones so the positive wire isn't connected.

I think if I just get a new mobo and case and HSF now and just get the money for them all for Christmas I'll be okay. That way I can just get them now and not have to wait until then.

You don't need a new motherboard to support a decent HSF. All of them will work with a 3-pin fan header. The fan will just run at full speed, which is a good thing anyway. Granted, a new motherboard will probably be a great thing, I'm just letting you know that a 4-pin fan will work with a 3-pin header, and vise versa actually.

Meh. I need a new motherboard anyway, I'll just get one. My current motherboard is like the worst thing in my rig.
