what is the average speed that a cpu has to have to play games? i know all games are different but what would be a good speed to get?

Depends on the CPU. Anything Athlon X2/Core 2 and up, 3ghz+ is usually the sweet spot.

so if the cpu is
Core 2 Duo Mobile P8600 Dual-Core Processor (2x 2.4GHz/3MB Cache/1066FSB)

it would be fine?

would it be around 4.8 GHz

Only if the game supports multi threading, but in theory yes. However Laptops tend to struggle with gaming due to restricted GPU power / inadequate cooling and battery life.

k thanks people

Nope won't be near 4.8 ghz. Will be 2.4ghz but there are two cpu's so things will get done simultaneously. Anway on a laptop cpu 2.4ghz is more than enough to play games.

What DrPepper said, they don't combine.. That should be OK if combined with a powerful GPU and a high-ish resolution.

for gaming on a lappy, the gpu (graphics card) is more important really... as most lappies with a decent gpu will have a pretty decent processor

Is your laptop just for games? You'd get loads more for your money with a desktop!

Damn people still go around saying this kind of stuff? Well i guess a i7 overclocked is 24Ghz then, hehe.

im just going to get a desktop instead. laptops aren't even that portable. if you want to use it it has to plugged into the charger anyways.

Your current graphic card is alright, I would keep that and upgrade motherboard + CPU + ram.
