I figure I'll hit up you guys about this one. I picked up an old Dell Inspiron 9100. I hear they run hot and some people swap in Northwood chips to keep it cooler.

Service tag is 8VYQT51. Here is Dell's system info on it.

http://support.dell.com/support/top.../details?~ck=ln&~tab=2&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen

"PRC,80546,3.0,1M,P4PD,800,D0" is listed as the CPU. 3ghz, 1mb, 800fsb D0 stepping. It's socket 478 I believe. Does anyone know which P4 this is? Prescott? Is it HT? What I'd like to know is, what CPUs will interchange in this laptop? Is it worth swapping in a Northwood to keep it cool? Maybe that would open up some overclocking headroom.

thanks.

Sup dude! Where you been?

Yep its a prescott and should have HT.

Northwoods don't run THAT much cooler, and you are halving the cache. I mean its a laptop, you cant overclock it and stuff so if it runs it runs :p.

Hi pinchy!

I've been super busy. Turboing my Mazdas, building a 120v electric Yamaha cycle, fixing computers, and a dozen other forums to deal with. The usual. :D

Apperently the 9100 uses desktop components on the board like a 865PE chipset for example. Apperently it has a PLL that the fsb utilities can access. I bought it just to tinker around with anyways. To be honest. I bought it because it was $125 and has a subwoofer. :p I have other laptops that work fine.

I did get one of those Acer One minis. I love it.
