hi so im using a 6600xt and one of the fans stuffed up on it so i took fans out of a gtx 1050ti that look identical to the fans in the 6600xt

i know the fans from the 1050ti work fine and when i put them in the 6600xt . thet dont turn on unless i unplug and replug then in to the fan header on the gpu while the system is on but if i power the system off and back on the gpu fans dont turn on .

i dont have zero rpm set to on and even if i manualy tell the fans to turn on they still dont unless i unplug and replug then in to the fan header on the gpu while the system is on

i find this strange and not sure if i should buy fans specific to the 6600xt or if the fan header is broken

anyone had a issue like this before im up to date with all drivers and i know no program is preventing fans from starting

Are the fans of the same model and specification? You can probably buy exact replacements your particular card (MSI Mech 2X 6600 XT?) from AliExpress, shouldn't be too expensive. Otherwise, contact MSI, they may be able to offer you a replacement.

they mount to the shroud and plug in and look like the have the same pin out but not the same model
i deshrouded it for the time been and mounted case fans lol

the fans from the 6600xt work on the 1050ti well the one that isnt broken does the second one dont spin as its broken .so i dont see why the 1050ti fans dont work on the 6600xt

When one fan went out on my Sapphire 7970 Dual I found an exact match on eBay for $12, which was for both fans with a prewired pigtail. They fit perfect and worked fine.

Buy fans specific to your card, then you will know

i never said i couldnt find and buy the correct onces lol i just find it stange how the ones i took off the 1050ti work in the 6600xt only when unplugging then from the gpu whiles its on and repluggng then .. i like reusing junk parts when i can considering they would otherwise just sit in a draw for the next 20 years haha i guess its just a different pinout ether way dont matter

Well that's just it, I thought it WOULD (and should) matter to you whether they work while on the GPU, so I offered an alternative.

I mean yeah, I like using what leftover parts that I can, but I usually leave that to fasteners, as anything electronics wise often has to be matched exactly.

lol probably just the manufacturer implemening some strange feature to prevent off brand parts from working . its 4 wired 2 for power and 2 for the pwm signial . . ive spliced many fan connectors in my time and never seen this before

Probably a lower starting voltage and hot plugging it causes some sort of peak voltage. this is hardcore stuff, i can't even imagine doing this with the pc on. hard enough while disassembled on the table.

It doesn't matter the reason, it still gets back to replacement parts that require electricity in PCs often needing to be the original spec. I don't see why you're surprised by this.

Two external fan headers start to look pretty intelligent at the point you have spare fans up the wazzoo and refuse to give in and order the correct replacement part.

Well I'm not sure you're advocating a franken-fix, or saying it's common it can't be done, but all I'm saying is, it's not surprising anymore that such things have to be matched carefully.

I also don't get the assumption MSI is doing this just to force use of their brand vs the exact specific TYPE of fan they use. If nothing else it makes the thermal and audible performance of the cooler more predictable, ie, as designed. I mean MSI if anything are charging pretty reasonable prices, unlike many these days. I haven't had the best GPU support from them, but I wouldn't say they are pushing their brand for no reason other than hard selling the customer.

Noctua swap ftw* and be done with it.

OP did match carefully and considerately. Clearly they have some experience in these matters.

There might be valid reasons for speccing hardware unique to sku or generation. Type of person who is going to cannibalize old cards on the spot to keep gaming isn't likely to be the most appreciative in that scenario. Here things didn't quite match up so they made a post to see what others might contribute to their fun project. To avoid temporarily :) needing to spend a small fraction of the time ordering the correct fans.

*Asus did just this with the SE Noctua cards and could feasibly internally use standard 4 pin fan connectors and add 4 mounting points on all their cards. DIY made simple - remove shroud/fans === install case fans.

there is no valid reasons for speccing hardware unique . its called making e-waste

tf is wrong with you people . i can but 5000 gpus its got zero to do with money i am a cheap person though ahah

Just saying it ain't worth the time, but go ahead and knock yourself out dude. You remind me of all those poor chaps who accidentally bricked their GPUs just to try to juice a bit more horsepower out of them with a BIOS flash. At least you didn't ruin yours though. LOL
