I was recently given a surface pro2 with i7 8650 and nvidia gtx 1050. I can actually fornicate on pretty descent setting on 3000x2000 res.
question
how does the game choose which GPU to use?
I have the Intel UHD620 and the gtx1050.
how do I know I'm running on the nvidia gpu?

Click the NVIDIA GPU activity symbol on the right bottom or watch the sensors in GPU-Z

GPU-Z can show track the GPU load for both GPU into a log file, and you can check whether the GTX1050 is under load or not.

Windows can guess whether an application is a game, probably through gpu drivers.
I think you mean fortnite? :roll:
