hello good people of tPU! i have a problem again which is kinda related to this this problem i had earlier in the month http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=75861

after having a few days with no broadband or telephone i was finally glad to be able to get online and do some fragging. i'd ordered Left 4 Dead and quickly got to installing it and playing it. the first time i launched it, went fine. but i couldn't quit it normally; the game froze and i had to switch off at the case's power button.

i switched it back on and everything booted up fine or as fine as i could get it - in any case it booted. a few hours later i decided to give L4D another go, it loaded up fine but once again the thing locked up after some minutes' play and had to switch off at the PC case power button again. this time though when i tried to boot up XP, i got some strange graphics artifacts on the load up screen before the blue welcome screen. it looks like small horizontal blue strips across the screen.

when i do get to the welcome screen the display is even more corrupt with it culminating in the screen frozen, if i wait i get a BSoD saying that a piece of hardware was caught in a loop. it's the nv4_disp thingy that's causing it.

before coming on here to get some help, i googled around to find out what might cause the BSoD; i've done a rollback of the driver, downloaded the latest nVidia drivers, i've gone back a restore point, and done last known good config, all of these still have the glitches on screen.

only when i go into safe mode do the glitches not appear which leads me to believe it might not be a hardware problem. part of me thinks it's L4D as this only happened after i installed it. and as i've prematurely stated in the other thread, the hanging on the welcome screen hasn't gone away, some days it might boot fine, others i'll need to go into safe mode and last known good, but that's by the by if i can get the glitches eradicated. sorry for the long post, i feel i have to explain everything fully.

i'm running XP 32bit with SP2, a QX6800 CPU, 2Gb RAM.

i'd appreciate any help you can give me, thanks

Update: it seems i may have posted this too soon. i've totally uninstalled my graphics driver and let it boot up normally, so far no glitches. my next thing is to install the latest drivers and go from there

back again with more woe! the graphical glitches have gone but in doing so i've found out what's causing the L4D lock ups; it seems the graphics card is on the fritz. i tried loading up BF2 and the same thing happens. so it's either one or more of several things: card overheating, PSU dying, dodgy drivers, or dodgy card itself.

one thing i've noticed is, it seems to work fine when i'm on the desktop, so 2D apps have no problem. but then i started getting purple shading across the white bits of the desktop and eventually a complete freeze. in safe mode, things seem to be more stable. i use Rivatuner to control the fan speed and cranked it up 100% assuming the card was overheating, but the glitches aren't going away. the next thing i'll do is clean the card and reseat it. i'm thinking that all this palaver with my XP not booting up properly might be affecting the card and causing the freezes/crashes and that a fresh install might be called for.

my question to you is, what's causing this failure, any ideas? feel free to ask for more info
