Hey everyone! Good afternoon! I'm looking for some advice on graphics cards for 1440p gaming and would love to hear your thoughts.

After sticking with 1080p monitors for a long time, especially IPS panels, I'm finally considering upgrading to a 1440p QD-OLED display. The plan is to use it for both everyday tasks and gaming, as well as general content consumption online.

I've always played in 1080p and never really tried higher resolutions, so I'm not entirely sure what GPU would be a good starting point. My main priority is performance — especially in competitive games where I value high FPS over visual quality. My idea is to run competitive titles at 1440p on low settings to maintain high frame rates, and play single-player or campaign games on medium or high settings, depending on the game.

Right now, my setup includes a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, 32 GB of RAM at 3200 MHz, and a GTX 1660 Super. I started upgrading in May of last year but ended up putting things on hold because I couldn’t find 1080p IPS monitors without annoying issues like IPS glow and backlight bleed — which really bothered me.

Now I’m ready to move forward and get both the monitor and the GPU. The monitor I'm considering is the Samsung Odyssey G6 (LS27DG612SLXZD), the 240Hz matte screen version, which is the most affordable option with those specs in my region (Brazil).

As for the GPU, I’ve been looking at a used RTX 3080 (10GB MSI Ventus 3X OC LHR), which is cheaper here than the RX 7800 XT, RTX 4070, or even AMD’s newer 9700 series. What do you think of that combo? Is it worth it? I'm open to suggestions!

For context, the games I mostly play are Battlefield, Warzone, DayZ, Tarkov, Squad — and similar titles in that style.

Get a 5070 Ti or a 4070 Ti Super.

For 1440p you want 12 or 16 GB VRAM, 5070 would also be OK.

Don't buy a 3080.

I didn't quite catch your budget. I am in about the same situation and I am going for a used RTX3080, which is around €300 locally. Compared to a spanking new 5070ti which is €1050...yeah, no thanks.

Exactly. I want a card that's good for playing games at 1440p on low or medium settings, but that doesn't cost more than the OLED monitor itself. If I had the courage (or the money) to take on a 5070 TI, I wouldn't even be here asking about the 3080.

For low/medium just wait and see what the 9060XT/5060TI offer honestly. If I was on a budget I would not spend money on a possibly 4+ year old 30 series card that was most likely mined on unless I knew the person who owned it or it was a deal so good that even if it died in 6 months It was still worth buying.

If the 9070 non XT was MSRP then it might be an ok option but it's inflated and not worth buying same with the 5070 especially for what sounds like an Esports system.

From what I see on fleabay it appears the 3080 and 3080ti are within few hundred of each other. I use a 3080ti for 39” 3440 x 1440 UW (for my simrig) and it is amazing. I recently upgraded to this UW in the last two weeks from 2560 x 1440. Am able to push some fairly high setting graphically but I also have a 7800x3d so they compliment each other nicely!! Only play iRacing and Tarkov but I have no issues.

3080 12G could also be an option and at least came a bit later with the mining lock in place if the price is right it's right in-between the two cards I believe in performance.

I also have a 3080ti in my secondary system and while I would not pay a ton more over a 3080 10G for this use case if the OP can find one for a good deal it might be worth a spin for the 20% more vram and 10% ish more performance.

But on a limited budget I would rather grab something slower with less risk and a warranty personally.

GPU should be the most expensive part of a gaming system.

5060 Ti 16 GB looks compelling at $430.

I have to ask, if money is so tight, is OLED right for you, considering the several year lifespan before permanent burn in?

If IPS is a problem, you could get a VA one. The AOC Q27G3XMN is a good one with proper HDR and you use the money saved on a better GPU like a 5070 or better.

Proper HDR on OLED is very nice.
I would await the 5060ti launch and potentially pouch a card there, or wait and see if the 9070 drops soon.

GPUs in contrast to CPUs has become more and more software “dependent”, older card has less newer features, especially around upscaling.

Note that AMD still is behind on upscaling being implemented in games.

If you have a limited budget and are considering a used rtx3080, you can also look at the rx6800xt/6900xt, which cost the same.
They have more memory and will be more useful for 1440p. The games you play do not use ray tracing technology, so you can safely buy the rx6800xt/6900xt.
Just look for a reliable seller with good reviews so as not to come across a card burned by mining.

Eh? It's not 2006 any longer. LG's latest panels are rated to have a 100,000 hour half-life. Playing games like a full-time job of 2,000 hours/year, that's fifty years of life.
