As stated in the title.
In NV control panel I have G-Sync on and monitor at 144Hz when I tried it.
Set it ingame to 144Hz and V-Sync off, my CPU load goes maximum and the ingame menus become extremely laggy. I can play GTA V with 60Hz V-Sync on , no problem and it runs fine.
It's just laggy with V-Sync off because the CPU load stays so high.

When you remove V-Sync the CPU has to do more work to feed the GPU and in your case it seems it's not able to keep up. Overclock the CPU or set the V-sync to a level where it doesn't hit the CPU limit.

Newest nVidia driver? What is the FPS you are getting in GTA?

Agreed. GTA5 is a very CPU bound game. When you leave v-sync off, the game is able to go all out to try to get to the 144MHz refresh rate of the monitor. The CPU will hit 100% because your cpu is the bottleneck.

However I don't know why it would be laggy....

Gaming at 1440p , V-sync on overall a steady 60~62pfs , sometimes 55fps with lots of explosions but it's overall smooth since I have G-Sync on.
When I turn off V-Sync the fps went up to 75fps or so I have seen that in a short period.

I expected G-Sync to work with the CPU, that it pushes just as many fps the CPU can handle staying at a certain load.

However I don't know why it would be laggy....

Right!

Well the CPU will work its hardest, which is 100%. However it shouldn't be "laggy" unless the frames dip under 30fps at certain times. The G-Sync monitor has a lower limit also so I don't know that that is.

Lowest dip is about 55fps.

fullscreen or windowed mode on GTA?

Dirt Rally with V-Sync off works fine......

Guess I'll keep the V-Sync on then in GTA V.:ohwell:

With v-sync you'll be limited to 60 frames but at least it won't have tearing.

Yeah right and the little dips below 60 G-Sync takes care of that.
Can't complain much because it runs fine with V-Sync on though.

No sync and its either gonna be GPU or CPU at 100%, one have to give :D.

Ok, just tried 85Hz ingame and V-Sync on (monitor refresh rate set to 85Hz), this works fine and getting 75~88fps average, CPU load 85~97% , the ingame menus isn't laggy at 85Hz now. :)

Right!
Well I would put some blame with rockstar here but it's an old gen engine, made before g-sync was but a dream.
I also think a cpu loaded high with your gpus flat out is to be expected its the same for all but i digress, surely the much touted nvidia fastsync has you covered it should limit it just enough id imagine, definitely worth a go.

I too get slight hitches on level load ins and transitions on occasion for me frame rate limiting is just as good with freesync also on and no hitches , fps ltd to 60, but no vsync on.
