First, it was excruciating, but well worth it in the end if you can muster the will power to wait, but it can be done. I have built 2 systems kind of like this after utterly failing first due to impatience and unwillingness to save up and look for deals. Had that typical "right now" mentality...
Microcenter is your friend... hopefully you have one near you! (for inspection before buying and CAN have some of the best open box deals)
Recommend to stay open minded on your build, had tons of variations for possible builds I was scoping out throughout the process including intel.
Goal was for a budget board and 7600 or 7600X originally, also scoping i5's and 600 and 700 series intel boards, by the time I was done got a better CPU and MUCH better board than I ever thought I would.
I saved and as I did I daily went on websites and looked at sales and open box items, sometimes multiple times/day.
As I saw a good deal at Microcenter around half or so, I would reserve it and go look at it to inspect.
If I bought it, made sure to test it within 15 days of purchase (return window on open box)
Got the CPU, ram and motherboard days apart from each other that way I could test without reaching out to someone for a spare board/CPU/Ram (good luck)
Basically made it so if I had to do full price on something it would be the ram to lessen the impact, but got lucky on a gskill 32GB CL36 6000 kit for $50 (bit of bad reviews, but I have had 0 issues)
All together it took around oh, a year, maybe a bit less
Very first gaming build I was impatient, wanted it "right now", and just got whatever I could afford resulting in something that I was disappointed in for what I felt was too much money for subpar stuff. Barely used it.
Second build I did much better, waited for deals and had a great little budget AM4 gaming PC that made me happy for quite a while!
3rd gaming PC was this one and got a mid tier build for a budget build price. With the carry over stuff going from am4-am5 was only about $430 (mb, cpu, ram) + 850w gold for $99
Retail was around $950-$1000, MSRP for everything was more than $1000 and I ended up paying around $550 all said and done
Seriously, if you are limited like me on funds... waiting is the name of the game! Had some luck on the AM4 build with Newegg open box, definitely more nerve-racking than viewing before purchase though.
Anybody else with some actual tips feel free, lets help some of our peeps to get some better upgrades!
Nam amor ludum - For the love of the game
