Even if still sealed in an unopened box I would not pay anywhere near that price. As reported by Tweaktown, it could be had when new for $320. But note that was 7 years ago!

IMO, a fair price, if in new condition and the "right buyer" came along, would be $160 tops.

Never overclocked doesn't make a massive difference - someone bought my i7 930 for £8 after being put under heavy voltage.

I always believe that not overclocking increases the CPU longevity because of less heat and stress. But thats just my opinion :|

"Right buyer" implies a need to source one (they are hard to attain now). You aren't a "right buyer."

I know what "right buyer" means. But we are not talking about a vintage car collector who just has to have that rare car in his collection, and is willing to spend obnoxious amounts of money to get it.

There is no real "technical" reason that specific model motherboard, and only that specific model motherboard would be needed. It is not some rare "proprietary" board that is the only board to support some program. That is, there is no compatibility reason only that model board will work. And surely, there are many less expensive boards that support that processor, Windows, and the applications that they run.

If someone is willing to spend $350 for a used board that cost $320 when new 7 years ago, then clearly that is the "right buyer" for the seller - but frankly, the seller would be lucky to find such a fool with his money.

IMO, if the OP tries to sell that board for $350 or even $200, it will be sitting on his shelf for a long time.

@Elmo - I suggest you try to sell them as a bundle. I might start with an asking price of $250 but be willing to sell both for $200 (or even less). If you wait too long, or ask too much, no one will ever want them. Then what are they worth to you? Nothing but scrap you might get $10 for at an electronics recycling center for the precious metals they contain.

If these parts were 2 years old, things would be different. But 7 years puts those parts in antique/legacy categories.

Here's how we evaluate PC hardware value:

Rule of Thumb - For a whole box, take your build cost and then subtract 10% .... then 5% for each month of age for 6 months (60% value at this point) ... then 10% for every 6 months thereafter.

0.5 year old - 60% of build cost
1.0 - 50%
1.5 - 40%
2.0 - 30%
2.5 - 20%
3.0 - 10%

Individual components will vary.... storage is tough to sell.... MoBo / CPU's you can get up to doubl the above numbers depending on how far away nbext gen is ... GFX card markey is too volatile tp predict.

X79 is nigh on 7 years old. So no one is going to look at these parts and say "Oh this would be a good value as the basis for a new build". I be hard pressed to offer $100. Now if ya found someone who just fried their P9x79 MoBo / CPU and can't afford to do a new build, I could see $200 for the pair, but only if you are willing to sit quite a while and wait for that guy / gal to come along.

Total nonsense, sorry. This definitely does NOT apply to second hand GPUs and certain generations of hardware are far more valuable than others.

I would say that depends on the market/audience you want to sell it to. I can tell you the price I can get them at right now in my area:
CPU: 80$ with shipping, claims mint condition too but no returns.
Board: 240$ BUT with 1 year warranty and return with invoice refurbished.

Selling it together like Bill_Bright mentioned can be a good idea. Start high and go lower if no one shows interest.

Also worth noting, what are you doing with the RAM?
Goot point. Since DDR3 is also legacy (DDR4 is here with DDR5 - totally different from GDDR5 - slated to appear in 2019), you would likely have more buyers interested if you include the RAM with the "bundle".

For now. But manufacturing plants are phasing DDR3 production out while ramping up DDR4 - just as they did with DDR2 and DDR before that. The result is less availability and higher costs. And RAM costs are already high enough.

This mobo has a similar tale. Rarity increases as boards fail. Then it's supply and demand.

I would accept that if there was something that board would do a new board can't. Or if that board held some special value to collectors, like a 2-door 57 Chevy or a 1943 copper penny (the vast majority were made of steel because copper was needed for the war effort). But there really is nothing special about that board (or the X58).

I would accept that if there was something that board would do a new board can't.

Thing is, that's what the market pays. Whether you accept it or not is a fairly moot point. I sold a used X58 Sabertooth not but a year ago for over msrp.

Don't get me wrong, it boggles my mind too. As best as I can figure, it's because the CPUs are outlasting the boards and can be had cheaply enough by virtue of being around enmasse that people can offset the mobos "rarity cost." It's weird, but it does happen, and you'd be a fool to part with that board to anyone but a close friend at your percieved value, because fact is they sell everyday for much much more.

I'm not doubting you. Though I think of the "the market" as the whole and your used X58 was an exception, not the rule. The general rule for pretty much all consumer electronics is it depreciates in value as it get old, not appreciate. This is due in a large part because newer electronics tend to be more advanced - closer to the state of the art. More bang for the buck, "greener", or just plain better all around.

The most notable exceptions when it comes to computer components may be RAM. As RAM gets older and harder to find, it definitely goes up in price. But I think part of that is because people want to add RAM to their older systems to improve performance - not because their old RAM died. But of course, there are exceptions there too.

It should apply though. 80% on a 3 year old GPU is madness.
Thing is, that's what the market pays. Whether you accept it or not is a fairly moot point. I sold a used X58 Sabertooth not but a year ago for over msrp.

And it's annoying as turds. It's nigh impossible to find good hardware deals now unless you're one of the lucky few who can spend roughly 70% of your time on staring on local ads on Facebook. We also have the bizarre trend of overvaluing old junk simply because it's old. There's always been people who says "I bought this new five years ago for €1590 so now I want €1290 and also the cat took a dump in it" but now it's everyone.
