I got my stepson a pretty good upgrade this year.
2560x1080 100Hz LG monitor to to replace a really bad 1080 monitor.
Upgraded his RX 480 4GB to an RX 6600.
Upgraded his Ryzen 1600AF to a 5500 (kept his X470 board).
Swapped some RAM with him so now he has some Ballistix MAX DDR4-4400.

Just received a brand old FE 1080ti that was doing AI work for a few years now to replace my aging 970gtx.

Will dust it and put zero fan bios and I'm good for a few more years now.

Gifting hardware is not really a thing in my family/they don't know anything about it so I've early xmas gifted for myself a Be quiet! Pure Base 500 FX case ~1 month ago. 'Didn't want to wait with it in case my prefered etailer runs out of stock/increases the price'

the GPU is OK.
the monitor is... well, LG. But it's wide, so.. OKay.. 100 Hz are Ok, and GPU-wise RX6600 is OK for this res.
but....

1600AF is better swapped to 5600X. 5500 is perfectly same as 3600 which is slightly better than AF 1600/2600 series.
I won't believe any day that poor 5500 could run this RAM at 4400 or lol at least at 4000... so, as any Ballistix today it's pure "bling bling stuff" lol
5600X also has way better IMC
hell, OC that AF on your powerful X470 and I won't believe it gonna bottleneck the 6600 at 2K wide lmfao.

I cannot stand zero fan on GPUs. When it first launched you could not even disable it either. That was one of the mitigating factors that got me into Water cooling. It made the GPU hotter at all times that it needed to be. Unless you are applying a super high fan profile you will struggle to keep the temps that you were used to before Zero fan. I like to see my Air cooled card idle in the 30s not the mid to high 40s as that also means that when the card is running the fans already have at least 10 more degrees to cool from the start. For me that meant GPU temps in the 70s and Hot spot in the Mid 80s vs with a 35-45 degree fan curve getting 60s on the GPU and high 70s on the hot spot. The principle I have always lived by is the higher the temp the faster the chip will diminish. I know that GPU fans ca.n be loud and some fans are absolute garbage but look at the size of the 3090/4090 shroud vs the PCB. The 4090 required a brand new design for water cooling too. That makes zero fan a dead technology (on the high end) for me as cards are not going to get slower. It looks like even the 7900XTX Waterblock are also a new design to compensate for increased heat. As you could compare the power draw of the Vega 64 to the 7900XTX but the new card how many more times density vs Vega in terms of transistors, resistors and capacitors. That is focused heat and kind of explains my next post, which will be in Your latest Tech Purchase.

I got a good deal on the monitor, $179 on promo.
$199 for the GPU which maxes out that res for what he plays. Already had the RAM which works great on Cezanne. 5500 for $99 running at 4630 MHz PBO seems pretty good. I don't think 5600x at $162 is going to give +62% performance. Hell my 5800x doesn't give much a difference.

The 1600AF I repurposed on a folding machine. That was the worst of the $85 1600s I bought. Can barely do 4GHz with 1.35v.

I appreciate low noise, silent if can be, much more than the most (so I learned over the years). He who is not sensitive to noise will probably not understand.

I tune for below 20dB at idle for the whole system and the FE has a nasty screechy blower.
So I cap the fan at 50%, core and mem at -150MHz and cap power at 70% to keep it under control.
I tune firstly for noise, then to preformance and in the end to temp (that is no tuning.
The case has good ventilation so heat is a non issue.

Zero fan on that GPU, or max 10% up until 45 degree is a bless.

That's why I always custom-cool.

"special occasions" - Most of my close circle of friends and family hardly know much about hardware let alone gifting one. When it comes to hardware i treat me, myself and I. The only tech-side-of-giftism i've received was donkey years ago or what seems like another life-time.... a pair of headphones, portable TV, a walkman and a Nintendo console...etc (thanks dad). Now in the boring and pay your own mortgage years its just shirts, aftershaves, ties, a basket full of non-alcoholic drinks cuddled with snacks and the odd man-jewellery. My second half does ask occasionally what I'd fancy... but i'd be mad to link her up to a gaming peripheral (i buy those on the sly or i won't hear the end of it)

"loose occasions" - Got a good network of colleagues and my brothers business ventures. A bunch of sweetly discounted hardware and the occasional freebie.

Thanks to the mining crash I picked up a few gpu mining frame kits for cheap (around $20 each) to collect the T-slot aluminum extrusions as raw materials for a project or two. Plan to build a custom tech bench/bench case and maybe some other stuff
