Ryzen 5 3600, right after the 5600x came out. For $300, as I thought the AMD CPU shortage would be as bad as the GPU shortage. Fortunately, I managed to sell that system and get a 5600X.

Socket 1156 system, should have gone with AMD at the time... 8 threads (i7) for gaming back then was useless, 6 cores (Phenom II X6 ) would have been it!

I could literally buy a 3080 at the same price a month after the purchase.

Creative Fatal1ty headset. Bought it in store after my $15 Philips SHP2500 headphones died after something like 5 years of service. All the reviews, even customer ones were praising it. They sounded like wet farts, since it was in store purchase I couldn't return them (even 1 hour after purchase). Sold them the next day to some local guy for something like $10 below the retail price.

Powercolor RX 580 8GB. Overall RX 580 is pretty good, but what Powercolor did to it is asinine. Fan control is all fucked up. It needs 3000-3500 rpm stock, because Powercolor thinks that it's not okay for your card to reach temperatures higher than 70C. It sounds like fucken jet. Even at like 66C it reaches 2200 rpm, which is very excessive. I have been trying to tweak it both in wattman or by modifying vBIOS, but nothing changes that fucked up fan behaviour. Fuck PowerColor.

(1) A Creative Labs Sound Blaster sound card I regretted buying years ago - because once connected, I realized (A) the drivers sucked and (B) the on-board sound was just as good through my THX certified, self powered surround sound speakers. I should have gone with my original, but more expensive choice, the M-Audio Revolution 5.1, which I ended up buying (and appreciating) anyway. Lesson learned: Do better homework before buying and stop being a tightwad.

(2) A $12 RJ-45 Ethernet connector crimping tool - a piece of junk. Lesson learned: Don't buy junk tools and stop being a tightwad.

(3) A $24 RJ-45 Ethernet connector crimping tool - a more expensive piece of junk. Lesson learned: More expensive junk tools are still junk. To save money in the long run, buy quality tools from the start. And stop being a tightwad.

(4) Two Corsair Carbide 300r cases - quality design, inconsistent manufacturing techniques and poor and inconsistent quality assurance (QA). One case still had rough, unfinished edges on the sheet metal resulting in shredded and bloody knuckles. Both cases were un-"true". That is, they did not have exactly 90° bends in the sheet metal. This resulted in the cases sitting on only 3 of their 4 feet allowing them to wobble. It also meant the side panels were extremely difficult to remove and replace due to improper fit. Note two other identical 300r cases were just fine (hence the inconsistent QA complaint). Lesson learned: Don't assume a company known for making quality power supplies also makes other products of similar quality. (Note: this was before Corsair changed PSU OEMs).

(5) Acoustic Research Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker - For $28 I was NOT in any way expecting anything close to high fidelity audio. I just wanted something a little better than the 40 year old Realistic (yes, from Radio Shack) mini "boom box" I had out in my shed for when I was putzing around the yard. I do not like wearing earbuds when all sweaty and grimy. I figured with the AR brand on it, even at that price, it could not be that bad. I was wrong. I have heard 60 year old "transistor AM radios" sound better. Lesson learned: Hire someone else to do the yard work.

Not me personally but a friend came over one day and demanded we go get him a GPU. We picked up a Power color 6600 for $600 Canadian dollars. 2 Months later and the same card is $429. The kicker when I went to his house to install I had a hunch and brought a monitor. Sure enough the last time the PC has been turned on was using DP and for some reason the card needed to have the DP input active to show the screen so he did not even have to buy a new GPU. Granted the 6600 is much faster than the 570 but he only uses a 50" 60HZ TV so for me it was a very regrettable purchase advisement.

Actually I have a recent one. Asus Xonar AE sound card. I thought it still held true that a dedicated sound card was better than on board but 1220 blows it away. $99 down the drain basically.

SteelSeries Arctis 7 way back in like 2016/17 iirc. Truly terrible audio quality for the price (both playback and mic). Tried to use it for a couple of weeks but gave up.

Google Pixel 4. A buggy mess topped off with a rubbish battery. It was so bad that I dumped Android as a whole and bought my first iPhone.

Rode NT-USB microphone. Nothing bad with it at all, sounds great actually. However I never use it :( and I've had it for 5-6 years.

Beko Automatic (bean-to-cup) Coffee Machine - this still counts as tech yes? Yes convenient to make a coffee but jebus, was it difficult to clean out the inside. They claimed that the inside only needed to be cleaned during the descaling process once every 2-3 months when really the internal brewer needed cleaning at least 1-2 times/week. I accidentally broke an o-ring inside it while cleaning it one day and the next time I used it, I flooded my kitchen bench of the new apartment I moved into. Changed it to a Sunbeam Barista Max semi-automatic espresso machine (essentially a poorman's Breville/Sage Barista Express). Super impressed with the replacement and easy to clean + makes a better coffee.

I regret paying launch day pricing for my X1800XT, hated my P4 prescott, but some of the cheaper AMD boards at the time had issues.

Original 775 socket coolers were garbage, I killed a board trying to push the pin in and the hole wasn't perfect and it cracked, Intel board too.

My Canon HG20, it was too expensive for the piss poor battery life you got and the flimsy build quality made me stop using it. At the time MKV files were hard to process as well, but the quality of video and audio was nice.

A second hand gtx 970 I got. Dit not look after for warning signs. First after I came home I see that cooler has been removed and when I put it in my pc. No signal and fans dead. I had just got a 100 % dead card that owner tried to repair him self but couldn't and Dit not tell me anything about it.

I had a good fight with him over returning the card and money back. First when I involved police I got my money back. So it ended well, but deffently and litterly an instant regret byeing it.

I probably don't buy as much hardware as most here so it improves my odds of avoiding bad experiences but there definitely was one. Back in 2000 before I started building my own rigs I bought an eMachines PC that came with Windows ME. It qualifies as my worst hardware choice and worst software choice all rolled into one. I returned the garbage before the 30 days was up.

There was a Logitech G400S mouse that I wasn't too fond of, and I ended up giving it away. It wasn't junk, but I wasn't comfortable using it.

Some cheap/junk headsets here and there.

Nothing tops this Seagate HDD though, which I bought in 2012/2013. No wonder it only had a 1-year warranty. Mine lasted about 18 months IIRC.

Several ASRock and Biostar motherboards for very tight budget for people that didn't want to get better stuff. The "I told you so" was part of the end deal, and I've avoided them like the plague ever since.

What was wrong with them? I've basically only bought the cheapest motherboards I could find (with the correct chipsets), and I have very rarely seen issues with store bought motherboards.
