well i finally upgraded my pc from my old 7800GTX to an HD 4870. Now of course i wanna see what this baby can do :). i got the PowerColor HD 4870 512mb as it suited my budget best. Now i figure i'll use GPUTool to oc it as when i ran Rivatuner 2.24 it says it hasn't been tested with my driver version and won't let me use its oc'ing options. So i try GPUTool and do find max on my core as i always find my max stable core clock then keep that core clock and procede with finding my max memory clock.

Here's where i think i'm being tricked by GPUTool. I click find max, and i wait...n wait...and then i'm in 1010mhz and i'm like bs, no way so i open GPU-Z and it says the same. Now i know this cant be as my temperatures didn't increase compared to my stock stress test run. 43idle/56max. So i'm stuck, what program can i use to overclock my HD 4870? Its not a necesity but i do want to kno what my card can do and have the option to use the oc's in 3dmark's and Stalker ClearSky, which came with my card. thanks to all replies

use overdrive in the CCC panel for now - you can always BIOS flash higher.

thanks i'd forgotten about that, been nvidia for like 4 years. Only problem is overdrive only allows up to 800mhz for core which i'm sure i'll surpass. Are there not any overclocking programs besides rivatuner and GPUTool? i'll use Overdrive for now and then use GPUTool's stress test. Though i ran into the constant overclocking bug in GPUTool before with my 7800GTX. Maybe a reboot will solve it idk, but yea i'm tired lol just getting the card when i got off work is what kept me awake. Overclocking tomorro :), also is there an HD 4870 overclocks thread or anything, i saw an HD 4850 overclocks one.

not really, you need to BIOS mod the cards to allow CCC to go higher.

i havent investigated far, i'm CPU limited with two so i leave mine at stock.

I tried so many bios' on my Visiontek 4870 512mb and narrowed it down to the XOC bios and the Asus Top bios. In the end I went with the Asus Top bios since it ran cooler for a stock card.

well i found my stable overclocks, haven't tried upping voltage or anything, that'll come later when i need it. I used Rivatuner, reinstalled and it worked though still showed the warning bout the driver, then used GPUTool's stability test at full screen for 40min without any errors. Oh and my temps stayed went to like 58 from 56, but i increased fan speed from 39% to 50% and they're back to 55max during the 40min stress test i did. Soo glad this card came with aftermarket cooling installed.

right now i got it at 821/4000

well 821/4012

i was hoping to hit HD 4890 speeds on core(850) but o well, just installed clearsky and am gonna start up that. Anyone else play it much? also is there an HD 4870 overclocks thread yet to chart TPU members' HD 4870 oc's?
