HDD copy slow

Quick question/issue, my internal HDD can copy to an internal SSD at ~200mbps but when I copy to an external SSD I only get ~40mbps. I can copy from internal SSD to external SSD at ~600mbps.

I have tested both usb-c ports on my computer, even swapped the pcie wifi card to another slot thinking it might be a pcie problem but still have the slow copy issue. Any insight into why this might be happening?

I'm not the PC guru here, but if the external drive is plugged into a usb port, maybe you're limited to usb speeds.

Are you sure you are using USB 3.x on both devices when running that slow external SSD ?
Also, fragmentation is a thing on HDD, when file is on different parts of platter - it will slow down the transfer (hence, defragmentation was born)

Is it a dedicated usb unit or in an adapter case.

The drive in question is an Asus nvme enclosure with a 1tb wd blue drive inside. If I copy the same file to an internal ssd and then copy to the drive the copy speed is super fast, but if I copy directly from the hdd it is slow. Also the internal copy rate is still super fast like 200mbps from the same drive.

It is a strange issue, also if I plug the drive into my top usb-a 3.0 port it doesn't work but if I swap to my top 2.0 port it does, the 3.0 port does work with thumb drives just won't work with my Asus enclosure which is why I use the usb-c port on the back of my computer, when plugged into it the drive works fine and is super fast, the only time it is slow is if I copy from an internal hdd which again works at 200mbps when copying the file internally.

The internal drives all have write caching enabled.

As mentioned it looks like I'm getting usb 2.0 speeds to the usb-c port but only when copying from hdd's.

Nevermind, I'm an idiot and had turned off write caching on the external drive, re-enabled it and all is well again.
