I'm looking for a replacement drive for my 1TB HDD. It's serving me as a game backup drive, I have copies of some of my steam/uplay/origin/gog games there. It's running out of space and it's 4.5 years old already, so I think a new 2TB would come in handy now.

What I need is 2TB and fast, since all I do is move huge directories from it on SSD and from SSD to HDD. I found this one, what do you think ?

https://www.morele.net/dysk-seagate-barracuda-2tb-sata-iii-st2000dm008-4765408/

https://www.seagate.com/www-content...a-fam/barracuda-new/en-us/docs/100817550b.pdf

1x2TB platter,7200rpm,256MB cache, this drive looks like a beast and it's reasonably cheap. Any other suggestions ?

If you're just sticking with 2TB, why not get an SSD? If you want an HDD, do what they're still useful for atm: lots of space! :) I haven't had any bad luck with WD blacks or Barracuda Pros btw.. but I guess the Blacks have a worse track record apparently.

2TB SSD for backup ? Are you high or 2Chainz ?

Yeah,I'm okay with seagate. Current 1TB is Seagate, had two before, 160GB and 250GB, the 250GB failed after 10 years. They are not the most reliable ones, but from my experience they far outlive what I expect them to last. 5 years for a budget drive like that is really good. I'd rather update that to a new 4TB in 5 years than buy 4TB now. Mechanical drives tend to fail, it just happens at various rates for various drives. I think my principle is to get a good value drive and get the most of it for a few years, then buy new, rather than spend ridiculous amounts of money on those high-end drives.WD Black 1TB is more expensive than this 2TB one.

I guess word "backup" slipped past me. Sorry. I figured a secondary/game drive (in which case, you definitely would still want something faster than SSD. I've managed with a HDD and caching with an small SSD.. and then a main SSD drive with some games).

I just don't see the point of getting a small-ish HDD though. Doesn't exactly play to their current strengths. They're on their last leg, and this all they really shine at.

Jesus Christ, read what I wrote, I've had 1TB for 4.5 years, it's running out of space. Why would I need a huge one now ? 2TB will last me another 5 years. I get TB/$ is better on bigger drives, but it doesn't apply here cause it'll take me years to use that extra space.

lol.. Don't take my advice then. It's just my 2c. I'm pretty single-minded I guess, on what worth an HDD has. I don't care for them anymore, except when it comes to shitloads of space. Everything else an SSD does better.

I've had good experiences with Toshiba drives and God knows I have had a lot of them. The 3tb drives are also very fast because of the platter sizes

I have 3TB P300, very good drive. Which ones are you referring to specifically ? X300 is out of the question, they're super loud.

Anyway, this drive seems very similar to their high-end lines like IronWolf Pro. he

Ether. Ive had both.

This. Bigger drives tend to have better throughput because of the density of the data and number of platters (you can read more in a single rotation of the platters.)

If you have the room in your machine, another option might be to buy a couple more 1TBs and RAID-5 it. One of the nice advantages of RAID-5 is that read speed is almost as good as RAID-0 but, you gain the redundancy at the cost of 1 disk worth of space. My RAID-5 (4x1TB disks,) reads between 200 and 400MB/s which isn't too shabby.

No, I won't raid 5. I have 3TB + 1TB that I want to replace with 2TB. The most crucial data I'll keep a copy on both drives.

So what matters most ? How big the platter is or how many there are ? Let's say we have 2 identical disks, except one is 2x1TB platter and the other one is 1x2TB platter. Which one will be faster ?

Grab the Toshiba P300s. I have two of them running in my pc as gaming, general storage drives and some as external dump drives

P300 is basically same price as the Seagate I linked in the OP, is it better ?

Fair enough. RAID isn't for everyone but, I certainly like it.

It's hard to say, it depends on how much is getting crammed on each platter and how many platters there are. Increasing the number of platters or the density both can improve performance so, it guess it would boil down to how much more dense a platter is or how many more there are. More platters could also mean more noise if it's a 7200 RPM drive because the additional platters means more weight and you need a stronger motor to spin it so, there is that too.

Honestly, I wouldn't over think it. I would just find a good drive from a reputable brand that gets you want you want in terms of warranty and features and go with it. I like WD so, I buy WD. Blacks if it's in the tower and actively being used (like my RAID-5,) or basically any of their 5400 RPM drives if it's a backup or something. That's me though.

If less platters is better, I'd rather go with seagate, it's 1x2tb vs toshiba 2x1tb, and 256mb vs 64mb cache.

Better depends on what you goal is. If capacity is the goal, more platters definitely isn't a bad thing. That usually translates into more capacity and a bigger cache. I suspect that you need the bigger cache to buffer the additional reads from adding a platter. Either way, cache tends to be sized for the drive. As I said before, don't over think it. Just buy from a reputable brand with the features you care about with a non-garbage warranty and you'll be good.

I would emphasize that warranty is important because I've had no component fail more often than HDDs. I like WD because I can get a new drive in a couple days with an advance RMA.

P300 is definitely a quiet drive, at first it may sound loud because it likely is fresh from the factory but you have to give it a bit of time to warm up. Mine became very silent after a couple of weeks of using it. Using the 3TB model.

for backups i'd go something reliable, in my case i went with a 4TB WD Red NAS drive.

Anything critical is backed up in the cloud as well, the drive just has things i dont want to lose, but can afford to (steam backups to save SSD space, being a prime example)

The red and purple drives seem to be pretty good for backups. I just wish they had the 5 year warranty like the blacks do.

warranty concerned me less than reputation, anything rated for 24/7 operation is safe IMO.

I had WD greens in my NAS that had absurdly excessive spin up/downs due to the aggressive power management, so i've been careful about the drives i choose since then.

That is why I don't want a typical backup drive, they have ridiculous amount that. I want something fast too.WD are just too pricey compared to Toshiba and Seagate. ATM there doesn't seem to be a better valure 2TB drive than this ST2000DM008 given it's parameters.I'll look into bigger drives when there comes a time for me to replace the P300 3TB, but that is not for another year or more.

What do you think about this, sell both my 3 and 1 tb drives, get this 6tb

http://www.superstorage.pl/product_info.php?products_id=3678

5 years of warranty, same price as toshiba x300 and seagate seahawk, cheaper than wd drives.

update:forget it, it's super loud

Why not consider the Firecuda SSHD?

Yes on the 6 Tb. The bigger you go the cheaper per Gb it is up to 8Tb. Might as well
I don't what yo think you will get for the 3 Tb but they don't go for much

How are those SSHDs when it comes to moving a lot of data from one disks to other ? Cause I don't think mlc helps in that.
