Hi,
I found a brilliant review of the Synology DS916+ on here which addressed noise and power better than other reviews I found, two areas I was interested in knowing more about.
The internal disks used in that review were 5x Seagate ST500DM005 500 GB (HD502HJ, Serial ATA III, 7200 RPM, 16 MB), however I'll be buying either 2x 6TB WD Red or 2x 6TB WD Red Pro disks to run in an initial SHR array.
I appreciate the Pro series are aimed at 8+ rackmount arrays and standard Reds are more for home use but I don't see why they can't work in a small setup. I've also put cost aside.
So here are my three questions...
1)
Does anyone have any practical experience of WD Red Pro noise levels in this model NAS? (or I suppose other home NAS setups failing that).
2)
If the increased noise is fairly minimal, isn't it a bit of a no brainer to run 2x Pro's instead of standard Reds and get the increased performance?
3)
The above review didn't identify any issues with the DS916+'s cooling/fans, and as they were cooling 5x Seagate 7200RPM disks, then surely cooling 2x WD 7200RPM disks will be even more painless?
My DS916+ will predominantly be a Vide Station/Plex media server, however will use it for other small tasks.
Many thanks in advance for any help
