HDPlex announced what it claims to be the world's smallest ATX power supply. Measuring 170 mm x 50 mm x 25 mm, this internal PSU is smaller than most 100 W-class laptop power-bricks, but packs a surprising 250 W of power output that's sufficient for most HTPC builds. The PSU uses highly efficient GaN FETs in its switching circuitry, to achieve its power density, with the company claiming 94% efficiency.

The PSU comes with a discrete AC receptacle on one end, and connectors for modular cabling, on the other. Cables include 24-pin ATX, 8-pin EPS, three SATA power, one Molex, and two 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors. 250 W not enough? There's a unique feature that lets you sync two of these into a single unit, by combining their AC inputs through a Y-splitter, and an ATX signal cable.



The underside of the PCB reveals the automotive-grade GaN FETs (automotive-grade implies high thermal tolerance). The next picture shows how you can combine two of these for a total of 500 W power, and still end up with a smaller footprint than FlexATX or SFX. HDPlex is pricing this at USD $145 a piece.

Tis a shame I already went with their 200W DC-ATX and mounted the 200W AC-DC brick to the inside of the HT5. This looks like a much more elegant solution.

Added a couple of more pics, one shows the GaN FETs, and the other shows how you can combine two of these for 500 W.
 
I like the idea for going ulta itx build with a discrete gpu. Still would like see a detailed review about how they tolerate temperatures. I guess 250w is sustainable and perhaps they peaked it out leaving no room for further watt extraction.
 
And here I thought form factors were just that...
I mean, this is nice and all, but it's not ATX, regardless of the outputs.

If HDPlex's history is anything to go by, this will be rated for 250W continuous with OCP configured to trigger not much higher than that. They'd much rather have you buy two of these than buy one, blow it up and then complain :p

You're right that it isn't ATX form factor, but it is ATX electrical standard compliant - just different meanings of the term, but the far less commonly used one is suddenly at the forefront here.



I think it's really nice to see HDPlex evolve their designs, and this frankly looks fantastic. It leaves behind their old 19V system, which was inherently inefficient due to several layers of high current voltage conversion, so this should be a significant improvement in terms of thermals. Adopting GaN is also great to see. The price is high, but that's expected for a high quality niche product, and it's competitive even with DIY 12V solutions using embedded/industrial AC-12VDC PSUs and a picoPSU, which is great. The form factor also looks great - the long, thin shape makes it easy to tuck away. I could definitely see myself adopting this for future builds, unlike previous HDPlex offerings.

Unfortunately, outside of the EU, bananas come in all kind of shapes, sizes and colours...

Well they do come in different shapes in EU too, cavendish banana is just the most common. I hope this was a joke and not some kind of "EU regulates the size of bananas" American belief.

I'm not american...
But yes, it was a joke based on the belief that the EU has banana shape regulations, as it was something the Brexit campaign was spreading in the UK, among other things.
Sadly Cavendish bananas taste terrible.
 
So i guess ATX is by the 24 pin plug, otherwise if it is smaller than a standard ATX PSU it is not ATX is it?

Is there a possibility that they can release a 375Watt in the same form factor? Then 2x would give 750Watt and could perhaps replace an SFX power supply.

EU does have banana shape regulations, like most other countries/markets. Because when stores order bananas they order them in advance from a spreadsheet, there are no pictures there, they don't go to pick them themselves, so they need to know what they're buying. Knowing HDPlex a higher output version isn't unlikely, but it'll be larger - likely thicker, but that's ultimately up to them. It might need more area to fit more connectors to make use of the higher output power. But you can be quite sure that this is as dense in terms of power/volume as they're able to make it, and any increase in output will come with a matching increase in volume.

Most likely, yes. You'd need to roll your own backplate for the AC receptacle (and it would be a tight fit with the larger AC socket at least), but other than that it looks like it would fit.

well aside from being a good scale for PSU they are also a good scale for radioactivity ...

my Geiger counter is in banana values...
